 "Great Router, Weak USB Dongle" 2008-03-21
By J. Lu (Atlanta, GA USA)
I bought this router / dongle combo but was not able to enjoy it very well.

I had trouble initially setting up the router. Once setup, the router does not give me too much trouble during use. I don't have the reset problems others are having.

The USB dongle is a different story. You plug it in and install the software. But the software was VERY difficult to use. It does NOT respond well. Sometimes it finds the device, sometimes it does NOT. What that means is that the USB device will disappear while using it.

Another issue is the signal strength. It seems to getting a strong signal in certain direction. BUT, sometimes, the signal strength will weaken without apparent reason. I gave it up after a few use.

Overall, the router is working fine for me. Both wired and wireless. Now that I have Level One WPC-0301 PCMCIA card, I am a happy camper with the router. :)

 "Okay, it works." 2007-09-08
By William Aprile (Modesto, CA)
This was a first time wireless router and adapter purchase and installation. After getting everything hooked up and installed I was able to operate my laptop and desktop off the router for a home network. My laptop uses its own built-in wireless system to connect to the router. My desktop uses the adapter (DWL-122G) on a USB connection to communicate with the router. I was disappointed that the range of the adapter was so limited. I thought that I would be able to use the desktop in another room. But as it turned out I have difficulties when I am less than 20 feet from the router with no obstructions. The signal is really weak. I have tried everything I know to boost the reception to the adapter (DWL-122G) but without success. The laptop is completely mobile with the usual loss of signal with more obstructions like walls. I can get reasonable use to about 30 feet with a wall or two between the laptop and the router, which is satisfactory for my home use. The adapter performance is the most disappointing part of the product.

 "pleased with wireless router" 2007-07-26
By Charles G. Pogue
I started from scratch trying to set up a wireless signal in my home. After some research, I ordered this D-link product, got it delivered quickly and installed it. I did have some technical problems getting it to work. First I tried to use the e-mail to get it shaken down, but they weren't very helpful. I went back to the information, got a number, called and got a live person without too much hassel. He was very good and got me through the connection issue and I haven't had a bit of trouble. The price was right and it works fine.

 "Good Router, Bad Adapter" 2007-05-14
By David Jimenez (College Station, TX)
Well, I had always trust D-Link, but now, not that much. You see, the Router has with me well over a year. The Adapter Kit broke down withing the month, and then I bought another that also broke down, though, this one lasted almost six months, then, I decided to buy another brand, that hasn't given me a single problem since I bought it, longer ago than what the two other lasted.

The router on the other hand, it has been great. I haven't had any problem with it. It has fallen, it was in a corner with a bunch of things around, including plants and whatnot (what a friend had to avoid or else he wouldn't have signal with his netgear). I had strong signal literally anywhere in my appartment (including the bathroom, tested!!). Now, I moved to a house more than twice as big as my old apartment, and I still have a good signal everywhere but the kitchen (where sometimes I have and sometimes I don't). Though, the adapter is a piece of crap that will break down fast, but the routher is well worth the price.

Ahhh!!! Something that is really great about D-Link: They have a great tech-support line. Unlike other companies, they don't charge you for it, and they will stay with you as long as it takes to resolve your problem!!

 "works alright" 2007-03-26
By G. Nelson
Item works as it should, but after using it for about 2 months I realized it would have been more effective to just buy a wired router and put a cable for each computer hooked up to it. It seemed like even with full signal the internet was going as slow as dial up. I still use the router but I ran a cable to my computers now.

 "great for wi-fi calling" 2009-01-15
By C. N. (USA)
i got this because i recently got the blackberry pearl flip 8220 phone. the phone has unlimited wi-fi calling capability through t-mobile ($10/month plan).

while i had some other issues with t-mobile, i had great results with this router as it puts phone calls ahead of surfing so i don't get the dropped calls i had with an older dlink router. web browsing doesn't seem affected. i do recommend this product although i'm not that crazy about t-mobile because i had a whole host of other issues with them and the phone. but if the router works with other carriers, then go for it.

 "Tried everything to like this product.. it never happened" 2009-07-27
By E. Cruz (NJ USA)
Most people looking at this router is probably looking for a router with VPN capabilities. IT JUST NEVER WORKED FOR ME.

I bought this a year ago, and tried all I could to configure VPN. It never worked. I emailed them, and they would usually reply back to me after 2 or 3 days. And their answer is not even relevant to my problems, or I have already done what they wanted me to do. Or would ask questions, that the answers could be found in my email. I wouldnt mind waiting for 2,3 days for a reply, but I was hoping they would at least give me some clue as to what my problem was.

I also called their customer support, I talked to them for about 40 minutes or so. (I dont think she did understand what VPN is) Then she finally gave up, and gave me another number to call. I havent called the other number yet, but I might give it a try. After all at this point there is really nothing to lose now.

 "Only cheap choice for WinXP VPN client - 4 months later - DON'T GET IT" 2008-12-18
By E. Richards (San Jose CA)
April 2009:

I'm updating my review because this simply doesn't work.

The VPN from Windows to it ONLY works if you're not behind a NAT. With the NAT-Traversal turned on it get's to the second phase of authentication but never gets all the way. ie The encrypted packets start but it doesn't authenticate after that. I have many Wireshark pcap packet files showing the problem from multiple NAT locations. The only thing that works is my WWAN 3G PCcard directly hooked into Verizon - and that's because it's not NAT'ed.

Interop VPN Certified - yeah right. NOT.

There is also another problem. Dlink is using Dynamic DNS.org's service for it's dlink-ddns.com BUT DDNS's policy is to only allow same IP address update at minimum every 2 weeks. BUT the router's max is 100hours. After a few "violations" of their policy they disable the account. SO... DDNS tracking doesn't work either.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dec 2008

Despite all the negative talk on the web about this router I took a chance - primarily for one reason - It seems to be the ONLY router out there that supports Windows XP VPN client. (I had to return the Netgear vpn prosafe router because of this). - I already have a D-link router and it has been solid for years.

DIR-330:

The web interface seems solid to me.

Here are the features/info I'm using.

Firmware 1.12 (came on the router in the box)

LAN 172.17.x.x with DHCP from 172.17.0.100..200

WiFi: WPA2-PSK/AES

WAN fully automatic DHCP connection to AT&T DSL modem.

Note:- I have had other D-link routers crash after a day until I found this out.... The AT&T DSL Modem hijacks 192.168.0.1 and screws up the routing tables if you have 192.168.0.x on the LAN side. SO - Don't use 192.168.0.x on the LAN side! (I was using 10.x.x.x until I installed this new router. The reason I changed from 10.x.x.x to 172.17.x.x was that when I VPN in there is a good chance that it'll be on a 192.168.0.x or 10.x.x.x network since these are so common. To make it so that I don't have the potential for any IP conflicts I chose a lesser used private network mask (from the 172.16.x.x...172.31.255.255 range). This allows me to keep static ip assignments in my \WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\hosts file without worrying about DNS working etc.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Private_network

The VPN was configured so that the VPN server is 172.18.0.1 and the VPN DHCP range 172.18.0.100..200

The VPN is set up as L2TP/IPsec for the most security.

I'm using the free Dynamic DNS from dlinkddns.com (built into the router) to track my DSL's real IP address and so far it's FANTASTIC!. I have a CNAME alias to it from my domain name serving at the (also free) everyDNS.net so that I can have "vpn.mydomain.com" instead of "blahblah.dlinkddns.com"

I have not noticed any bandwidth drop from the older D-link router to this one. I can still watch streaming HD from Netflix on my TiVo-HD connected via WiFi.

I'd give it 5 out of 5 but it's lacking a VPN wizard and it took me a little while to work out how to configure it. The docs on the right column of the web interface could be more featured too (in particular the ddns page).

So.. I'd say give it a go.

 "Worst router with lot of features missing ... ...." 2008-09-19
By Selvamohan Neethiraj (Sterling, VA, USA)
This router would disconnect all connections when you SAVE the changes to the router. Usually, that happens on router only when you reboot the router.

'NAT Loopback' feature is missing. If you are a small business firm, please stay away from this router. You can not access 'Port forwarding feature on port 80' from LAN.... You can use it only from WAN.

Support from DLINK is so poor. You ask some questions, they come back with answers for totally different questions. For example, I asked questions regarding why connections get disconnected when the router changes are saved. Dlink support comes back with a follow-up question as how do I reconnect the connection ? So support from dlink gets ZERO mark....

I do have other DLINK routers (dir-625,...) that works much better. But, this one is meant to spoil their brand ....

 "Stay away" 2008-06-18
By Nathan Boyd
This is the absolute worst product I ever bought. I bought it explicitly for the VPN accessibility. I never got that to work. If you have to forward a port..make sure you know what you're doing cause once you choose the port, you can't go back and change it.

Also, which was rather nice (sarcastic)....the people in support were able to establish a vpn connection to my router but I couldn't. I used 3 different machines with the trial software they recommend. Their solution was that instead of using the trial software..BUY their product and then try it.

I never write reviews but I don't want anyone getting screwed with this thing.

 "Works flawlessly with Windows 7 RC" 2009-06-05
By ragamuffin74 (Mililani, HI USA)
I installed this card two days ago in a Windows 7 RC rig. I didn't even need to install drivers to get it running (and Windows Automatic Update immediately found an updated driver from D-Link). It's been running non-stop ever since. The speed is a consistent 300 mbps (but the machine is in the same room as the wireless router, so this shouldn't come as a surprise). I haven't experienced any of the intermittent failures or installation problems reported by other reviewers.

So far, this card has been a complete non-event.

 "Everything works as advertised" 2008-11-17
By Wayne (Austin, TX)
I purchased this card for use in a media center PC that's about 20ft away from the access point. But since it's across a hallway, I didn't want to run a cable over there. It's also going through a wall and a cabinet, yet still manages a very reliable and fast connection.

Installation was very straight forward. Simply install the card, attach the 2 antennas, and install the latest drivers from the D-link website. You'll note that I didn't mention the CD. :) If there were a course on installing cards, the very first thing they would tell you is to ALWAYS get the latest drivers from the manufactures website. The only time you'd want to use the CD is if there is some software that you can't get on the website. Scanners and Printers are a good example of this.

And even if you have to install them from the CD, you still want to go the website and see if there are any updates, patches, drivers, etc. This is even more important with new technology (ie. 802.11n). I should also note that I never use the utility that is installed by wireless cards. In this case, I just used Vista to manage the wireless connection. It connected to my WPA2 secured network without any issues.

I've been transfering several GB of data via wireless for the past severals days without any issues. No dropped connections, lockups, etc. Just like all of my other wireless devices really. I cleared my house of any other devices on the 2.4Ghz frequency years ago to ensure there is as little interference as possible. And while this isn't the final 802.11n standard (not due until Dec 2009), it is latest Draft 2.0. Which so far appears to be the most stable.

Pros:

* Includes low-height bracket

* Inexpensive

* Easy installation

* 802.11n Draft 2.0

* Reliable

Cons:

* They should include a note that tells you go download the latest drivers. :)

Overall I have no issues or complaints and would recommend this card. I suspect the older reviews are a bit more negative simply given the fact that they were written awhile ago and/or relied on the old drivers on the CD. Just get new drivers and you'll be happy.

The DWA-542 is simple to install and set up, but the software is really unstable. My Dell Dimension 8300 (3.20GHz Pentium 4; 1.5GB RAM) locks up at random times with the D-Link installed. There seems to be no rhyme or reason as to why it freezes the computer; it just lets me down every time. Sometimes it freezes on reboot; other times it locks up after a few minutes.

I'd avoid this product until they get the bugs ironed out.

"If you believe it's time to put principles above parties, character above campaign promises, and Common Sense above all -- then I ask you to read this book...."

In any era, great Americans inspire us to reach our full potential. They know with conviction what they believe within themselves. They understand that all actions have consequences. And they find commonsense solutions to the nation's problems.

One such American, Thomas Paine, was an ordinary man who changed the course of history by penning Common Sense, the concise 1776 masterpiece in which, through extraordinarily straightforward and indisputable arguments, he encouraged his fellow citizens to take control of America's future -- and, ultimately, her freedom.

Nearly two and a half centuries later, those very freedoms once again hang in the balance. And now, Glenn Beck revisits Paine's powerful treatise with one purpose: to galvanize Americans to see past government's easy solutions, two-part monopoly, and illogical methods and take back our great country.

Many(hopefully most)of us know that our country has moved away from the constitution and that government has grown close to the point of no return. In discussions with others I bring up points here and there to explain the case for the constitution and for freedom. However putting all the points (or at least most)together in a cohesive easy to understand package would be for me a very difficult undertaking. Thankfully Glenn Beck Has done that masterfully in this great book. A fantastic book to get out the message and save our country. I wish everyone would read this book. Unfortunately most reviews for these political books are written by cheerleaders (5 stars)

or by haters (1 star). I actually read and enjoyed the book. I certainly don't agree with many of Beck's assertions, but he raises many valid points. If Beck had included footnotes and proper citations, I may have given the book four stars. Though written in an accessable (i.e. simplistic) fashion and preaching somewhat to the choir, the book is an eye opener even while sometimes being infuriating --Can anyone besides Glen Beck actually be angry that Teddy Roosevelt reigned in the robber barons and established the national park system? The best section was on the fiscal irresponsibility of both parties and the unsustainability of our insane deficit spending and underfunded entitlement programs. Nothing really new or revolutionary, just well presented. By the way, you idiot leftists that trash conservative literature without even glancing at the book with the sole purpose of lowering the rating should be ashamed of your purile behavior. You are lowering the value of these reviews by encouraging rightwing zealots to only post 5star ratings to compensate. My advice is for you to get a life!

 "Does common sense still exist?" 2009-08-14
By David E. Kneeland (Arvada, Colorado United States)
This book is a MUST read for every person on this planet, not just Americans. I think everyone should have the chance to read and then decide for themselves; do we really need such a large group of public servants interfering with every aspect of our lives? Why doesn't government just get out of our way and allow the free markets to evolve naturally and either become successful, for the good of all of us, or fail on their own. People have lost sight of how this greatest of all countries was born and this book will help to educate and remind us all of our true heritage. We all have the potential to become the very best we can be and to continue to enable this wonderful country to be the very best in the world, but not with the current government infested with the self serving and corrupt politicians that have decided for everyone else that we need "change" to socialism. That leads to misery and destruction of our hard earned freedom and liberty that was won by the blood and sweat of people with true unselfish character who valued freedom more than their own lives and wealth.

The DWL2100AP worked OK as an access point, but does not work as a repeater. Other reviewers suggest that it works only with other D-Link products, because of proprietary protocols. All I know is I wasted a lot of time trying to get it to work as a repeater, and was unsuccessful. I bought a Hawkings repeater, and had it working in 15 minutes. By Ann Engh
Purchased 2 DWL-2100AP's to use as a bridge between 2 buildings with an unobstructed distance of about 750ft. I was expecting the usual 2-day setup headache to integrate these into the network, but to my surprise the 2100AP worked perfectly once the initial configuration was completed. Plugged in an old Linksys WAP54g to the far end of the bridge and created a greatly expanded network. Total setup time took less than 1 hour. I have not measured data transfer, but it seems very good. No problems with streaming video, etc.

The instructions for the 2100AP are a little sketchy, and D-link seems to interchange some technical terms that mean the same thing (adds color and confusion to their writing!). However, I did not find the instructions any worse than the several Linksys or Netgear Wireless Routers that I have installed over the past couple of years.

If we get a couple of years out of these, for the price, I'll be happy. It seems like there is no middle of the road wireless equipment. Either it is really cheap of dubious quality or really expensive. Someone needs to come out with some equipment that is of better quality at a reasonable price.

 "Great performance after a difficult setup (AP Client Mode w/ Switch)" 2008-03-07
By stoney (seattle)
I have a d-link router (DI-624) that I use for my wireless network. I wanted to install this access point on the network, attach a switch, and provide network access for a home-theater pc and an Xbox 360.

modem <-> router ... accesspoint <-> switch <-> pc & xbox

The access point can operate in five different modes. After some trial and error, I finally figured out that it was the "AP Client" mode that I needed from the wireless setup options to gain access to my existing wireless network.

After plugging in the switch and attaching the PC and Xbox to the switch, it was soon obvious that only the PC had connectivity. After much hair pulling, I finally found a post on dslreports.com by one lizi555 that explained a fix. Apparently the latest firmware (beyond 2.10) does not allow for more than one device (MAC address) to connect to the network via the switch.

To fix, telnet to the 2100AP's IP address 192.168.0.50 and enter the following commands -> set matstate 1 then -> reboot

This should set a flag for a variable to the following "MultiEthClient (Yes)!" You can check by establishing another telnet session and entering -> get matstate which will list several variables/values including the one above.

It took some doing, but now everything is flowing sweetly. I hope this helps anyone else that runs in to this problem.

 "Good product with a little Knowledge & exprience with networking" 2008-02-27
By Chet A. Hammonds (Hazel, KY United States)
I have 3 of these units working with a shared but hidden network and after some work and software upgrades have them set up for a good area network system... They work great once you figure them out... The instructions and on line support are not the greatest for a wireless network novice... Once you understand what you want and what they supply, you can set up a good home or local area wireless network...

 "Does the job, but..." 2007-09-14
By Barrett Campbell
It (or a combination of it and my wireless router) intereferes with bluetooth. Now if I want to use the bluetooth on my phone, I have to unplug all this stuff ;(. VERY ANNOYING!!! Installation took 3 hours with 2 different reps. D-link customer service is outstanding, by the way. Also, my download speed seems to be limited to 75 kbps on the WAP end. Upload is more than double that, which is wierd. Looks like I need another few hours on the phone with tech support.

Bottom line...works kinda well when you actually get it set up. However, getting it set up can be an exercise in patience. Expensive for the speeds I'm seeing :(
