 "Problems from the start" 2009-07-30
By Matthew Greenberg (San Jose, CA USA)
I just bought the router today and the thing does not work. I followed the installation procedures and I am having problems connecting with the internet with the router present.

The installation was a snap but after the installation, I could not connect. I talked to Tech Support and they helped somewhat and I was treated well but the woman admitted to me that they are getting many calls about connection problems. She helped me connect my desktop but my laptop was not working wireless or with the network cable with no success. She said that I would have to go to level 2 support...

I am an engineer and not a technical slouch... I am successful is diagnosing problems but the router should work as designed otherwise you have to configure every machine connection individually which is not how the router was designed.

I did a second install which did not work either. This router is going back to Fry's; I do not know if the G version of this router is worth it or should I try another brand (it is hard to decide between the reviews that I read from the other vendors)...

Any ideas?

"The worst tech. support ever encountered." 2009-07-29
By W. Silva
I purchased the WRT54G2 and followed the instructions to the letter. The install was straight forward and I encountered no problems. When finished, the instructional cd informed me that the installation was successful. When I attempted to use my laptop on the wireless network, it would not connect. I eventually contacted tech. support. BIG MISTAKE. After an hour of following numerous changes to the network settings I was told that it must be my computer. My laptop is what I use at work, & it works flawlessly every day in a wireless setup. However, I was told to go to work and try again. The laptop worked fine at work. So I called again today, after another hour, I was told that BOTH my laptop & desktop were broken & that I needed to get them fixed before the Linksys router would work. I told the tech that both computers were worked perfectly before the 2 hours of changes & that Linksys is responsible for the network problems that I now have. I was put on hold to talk to a supervisor. After 38 minutes of music, I hung up & have sent the Linksys back to Amazon. I have been using computer related equipment for over 25 years. I have never encountered such useless & counter productive advice. The Linksys tech support makes HP support seem like Apple Care!

"Great router though the range isn't as good as it could be" 2009-07-28
By T. Wheatley
The router works great. I had previously been using a Netgear WGR614 router (which was still 54mbs and wireless g enabled). The Netgear router kept dropping the connection and seemed like it was overheating.

I purchased the Linksys router and like it for the following reasons:

1. Looks much more sleek

2. The Internet seems faster and more responsive

3. My Vista machine gains back its connection much more quickly when coming out of sleep or hibernation

4. No more dropped connections

5. Option for https configuration

6. Has WPA2

7. Tried out the connection and the WPA2 works with the Wii, and the G1 Android phone. Ooma worked fine through the wired plugin.

Things that could use some improvement:

1. I don't like it when you have to install software for peripherals and accessories. I installed the software, and will uninstall it because I can get to the advanced settings directly through the router interface.

2. I checked the signal strength in different parts of the house before I disconnected my old router and then after connecting the Linksys router. Where I received Very Good with the old router, the Linksys router only gives Fair to Good connection strength.

I bought this wireless router for my new Apt. It was easy and fast to setup, just connect the cables to my Desktop and my PS3, just took me 10 minutes to protect the WiFi with a key or password for the neighbors not to use my internet connection for free!!

Very pleased with the preformance and it looks very nice and modern too!

"Would not work out of the box. C.S. was awful..." 2009-07-26
By M. Gaita (Boston MA)
I bought this product after my DLink router died. It lasted 4 years, so I was happy with the purchase. Anyhow, I went to BB because I did not want to wait for a unit to ship. I purchased this unit and it would not work. (There were no Dlink items in stock) I spent about an hour with "customer service" and they said it was unable to work because of our network. We have Comcast and I had already contacted them and was certain it was not their issue, as we have cable and phone service and both were fine. I returned the unit to BB and purchased a Netgear router. It was easy to setup and has been great. It is less expensive as well.

By Damodar Chetty (Minnesota, US [www.swengsol.com])
I just got this recently when my older router died, and wow!

I had it up and running, wireless WPA2-Personal with all my computers connected in well under an hour. (I'm learning that it's hard to overstate the need to recycle/reboot units when working with networking products.)

The number of rave reviews on this item say it all - but it really is a solid little unit, and I wanted to add my voice to the chorus. The unit feels well built, and even the solid colors inspire confidence :)

I have no plans to use non-Linksys firmware, but its nice to know that I have that option.

Happy Networking!

"NO CD included/warrenty runs out& you are up a creek!" 2009-07-11

I bought the highly recommended WRT54G last March. It has been an excellent router, but "stick it to ya" is the quality of customer aftercare! Today I needed to reinstall it on my iBook and called Tech Support as previously instructed. Because my warrenty had run out, I was told I had to buy $29.99 Support for the incident or $39.99 for 6 months. NO CD HAD BEEN INCLUDED AND I WAS TOLD THAT I DIDN'T NEED ONE when I called upon delivery from Amazon last March! BOTH Amazon and LinkSys told me that! The first response I was given was that LinkSys could not help that I had not gotten a CD. After many minutes of being put on hold and wrangling over this, I had to raise my BP and my voice to get instructions as to where I could find guidance to reinstall. It is on their web site; it is a download. Getting that info was like pulling teeth! The Router is the first and last LinkSys product I will buy or even consider! LinkSys is going to go out of business if they keep up the "lies ' n lines!" It is not the employees' faults - it is LinkSys Policy!!!!!!

I live in a decent sized house and so far I have not had a problem getting signal in any of the rooms. I have been able to use my computer outside as well. I was able to set everything up and get it running in about an hour maybe less and it was all very user friendly and fairly simple. Over all I'm happy I chose this router.

 "Long-time owner" 2009-02-02
By K. McNutt (Minnetonka, MN United States)
I have owned this router for over three years and haven't had a single problem with it. I have it mounted on the ceiling in the utility room and we get a good signal throughout our medium-sized rambler, even out to the backyard deck. We have a mixed Mac & Windows environment, both wired and wireless, and everything runs smoothly. I transfer large files to and from my studio's FTP every day and have never had a glitch related to this router, and I'm not exaggerating. NOT ONE ISSUE. I am looking at adding an Airport Extreme (merely for its wireless-n and remote disk capabilities) but keeping the D-Link as the switch, as it does such a great job. Additionally, I found mine at a time when it had both a sale price and a rebate, so when all was said and done I paid less than $(a couple of regular-priced CDs), which was pretty amazing to begin with, but I never thought I'd get something so affordable that did its job so well.

 "Pretty stable router" 2008-12-29
By David A. Derolph
I'm amazed at the number of negative reviews here. Mine is rev. A3; I bought it in March 2006. I updated firmware one or two times - once, I believe - since I've owned. The only problem I've had is that it has, on a few occasions, stopped sending a wirelss signal to my notebook PC. At first, I thought the problem was with the PC, but I discovered that it was the router. The solution was to logon to the router admin panel, disable "radio broadcast", i.e. the wireless signal, and then enable it again. But, overall, during more than 2 1/2 years of heavy use, it's been a pretty reliable device.

I have WPA wireless security enabled. I use my notebook PC in a room next to the room where the router sits. I get a strong signal at the PC.

"Good for basic home use." 2008-07-22
By Rory B. Bellows
I have had this router for 2 years and it has worked well. I haven't experienced any problems I've read in other reviews such as disconnects, however I found that when running many simultaneous connections (Bittorrent), the router would sometimes begin to refuse incoming connections and would have to be rebooted to resolve the problem. Other than that it has worked fine both wired and wireless connections are stable and configuring my LAN was not a problem. This router is fine if you are just going to surf the web but if you want to do anything that would require multiple/high bandwidth connections you should look for something better.

"Very unreliable. Do not be fooled by price." 2008-07-06
By Ryan Rossette
I've had this router for over three years and it's been a nightmare. The wireless connection is just plain unreliable. Even if I am three feet away from the router and get full bars it could sometimes take an hour to actually connect. And when it finally does it will occasionally drop and have to reconnect, which could again take an hour. It's like a lottery with the wireless connection of this router. You can't rely on it if you need to do work. I have a friend with this exact model who has all the same problems.

I would strongly suggest getting the Linksys WRT54G instead. If you are tech-savvy, get the WRT54GL and hack the firmware. The wireless always connects immediately and has never dropped. You have to pay a little more to get something that works.

This D-Link router is not worth any price. Always read reviews before you buy.

I have had this router for about 3 years now and have had no problems with it. I originally got it to set up my son's computer wireless - along with the usb air utility - worked great. Now I use it for my laptop and my sons computer - I currently dont even have it hooked to any computers - I just plugged it into my dsl modem and everything is wireless. I do not know anything about the more expensive models because this is the first and only router I have used. I do know that my computers are really fast and don't know how they could be any faster with a $100+ model router!!!

 "it just works" 2009-07-21

just installed 2 of these in my home network (one as 802.11n only access point @ 5ghz, the other as a wireless bridge). setup for both took about an hour, fairly painless. got the N network up and running with no issues. the bridge connected to the AP quickly and without a hitch. i did a file copy between 2 desktops via the 802.11n wireless network, Vista says an average of 8.77 mbps, and a 32.7 gigabyte ISO file took 1 hour and 6 minutes to copy without any hiccups. this should be more than ample to stream a blu-ray movie over the wireless N network.

4 stars only because of the set up was a royal pain.

"Do not buy for Wireless Bridge" 2009-07-08

The wireless bridge function is nearly worthless. I had an AP in the next room and it rarely found a signal even though my laptop next to it had full strength on wireless. When it did get connected, it would only stay that way for about 5 minutes then drop with no indicatiors.

"Excellent Wireless Bridge; Poor Instructions" 2009-07-06
By AV
I've set up 4 of the DAP-1522's in bridge mode, 1 for me and 3 for friends and family, all connected wirelessly to D-link wireless routers (DIR-655 and DGL-4500) utilizing WPA2 encryption.

WPS (Wi-Fi Protected Setup) makes setup a breeze if your router also supports WPS (you don't even have to access the web-based coniguration utility). Push the WPS button on your wireless router until it starts blinking and within 120 seconds, push the WPS button on the DAP-1522 until it starts blinking. Within a short time (less than a minute?), the DAP-1522 connects securely and wirelessly to your router.

In my setup, I have a 2 standalone blu-ray players, a PS3 and a Denon 3808CI receiver connected to the bridge with Cat6 or Cat5e cable. My wireless router is located about 50 ft. away in an upstairs room. Both blu-ray players and the PS3 have wireless built-in, but I was getting better signal strength using the bridge. Also streaming Netflix (including Netflix HD), Pandora and YouTube through the blu-ray players. All four components can also stream media from any other pc on the home network.

Where D-link fails is when you have to actually manually configure or want to update the firmware on the DAP-1522. The instructions, imho, are really unclear and dealing with D-link support over the phone is a test of patience. Basically, if you have a router and need to access the web-based configuration page of the DAP-1522, you'll need to connect it to an open router port. The switch on the back of the DAP-1522 should also be set to AP (access point). Once that is done, type in the ip address, 192.168.0.50, into the address field of your browser and you'll get to the login page of the web-based configuration utility.

Other than the instructions, the product has been working as advertised and having 4 ports instead of 1 like other bridges is also a major plus.

"Good product, hard to find, but not all hoped for" 2009-07-03
By R. J. King (Los Angeles, CA USA)
The DAP1522 from D-Link is an inexpensive yet effective way to get multiple wired devices connected to a wireless internet signal from another room. It's simple and easy to set up, and doesn't take much space.

That said, it was hard to find, because many retailers that claim it as "in stock" really have it on backorder, which could take weeks or months to get (and D-Link may not even be supporting this product anymore).

It's great for gaming systems, advanced TVs or set-top boxes that don't have built-in wi-fi. It's also useful for setting up a wired network in a separate room from where your cable or DSL comes in for fast file transfers and streaming HD video.

However, if you want to run a home server, this is not the box for you. Some internet sources claim this box supports WDS, but it does not. It's only a client bridge, meaning MAC addresses and local IPs are funneled into one at the DAP1522. Your router will only see whatever device happened to send information last, preventing you from doing any port forwarding or advanced packet routing to the server.

 "Good for qwest people" 2009-07-01
By Baron (Seattle)
I bought this because my old actiontec modem was giving me major problems after a powersurge. Setup was easy and getting back online took about 5 minutes. Note I did some major research to make sure I had all info I needed.

Pros

1. Easy manual setup to get online

2. Getting full speed

3. lots of features

4. works with qwest

5. on/off button

6. Can do wep, wpa, wpa -tpk and some other security and mix them so you don't have to donwgrade your security just play your Nintendo DS online. Why the heck doesn't NDS use wpa. Really nintedo get with the program.

Cons

1. Auto setup doesn't work (you don't really need it)

2. Runs hot so I suggest turning it off when not in use.

3. Instructions are a joke.

4. Common terms are changed at random. EX: Port Forwarding is now Virtual Server, WPA Key is now WPA pre shared key. This craziness cause me extra time looking up how to setup wireless

5. Wireless setup took 30 minutes because of lack of instructions

all in all a great dsl modem and cheaper than buy a over priced modem from qwest.

For qwest people note these things

1. set vpi to 0 and vci to 32

2. make sure you have your user name and password for whatever isp you use. Since this is saved in the modem you might have forgotten if you haven't used it in years.

3. Qwest probably won't help you if you tell them you are using this modem. They'll probably make you buy or lease one of thier modems. So you probably want to keep your old modem on hand assuming it works enough.

4. probably want to copy all the ports you are forwarding and mac addresses you are allow before you switch modems.

This router was so easy to set up! I have AT&T DSL and I just read the quick setup guide and in minutes I was online. Setting up the wireless was easy too. Was able to use my old SSID and password so I didn't need to change anything on my other computers.

It does run a little warmer that the 2WIRE modem I had before but it works so much better and I noticed a speed increase too. I do have it placed vertically so it should get more than enough ventilation.

After using it for a couple days though it seems to run cooler now. Even after hours of downloading!

All in all a great purchase!

"a breeze to install with Linux" 2009-04-11
By J. Barros
For years, I have used a DSL modem (SpeedStream 5360) and D-Link DI-604 router, for my PPPoE account with AT&T. I just got a new wireless Netbook running Linux, and so shopped for a wireless router. After studying the reviews on several routers, the DIR-655 was my first choice. However, the wireless died a week later, and returned it. My next choice was the DSL-2640B (modem and wireless router combo). I used the CD to view the User Manual. Login under the admin account. Chose the auto-connect and it did not work; no DSL connection was found. So I disabled the DSL Auto-connect box, and followewd the various screens. I was able to get on the Internet with my Linux desktop. The final step was to setup the wireless in the router (first) in the netbook (second) using the same security autentication: shared (WEP 128-bit key) using 13 ascii password. Rebooted the netbook and it worked.

 "Works great; terrific value" 2009-04-08

This wireless router does exactly what it's supposed to do. Reliable signal that actually has a very good range (strong signal throughout my house). If you shop around, you can get it at a very good price.

"The Power Supply Is This Product's Achille's Heal" 2009-03-22

D-Link DI-624 Air Plus XtremeG Wireless 108G Router

This unit worked fine until the power supply failed. D-Link does not sell replacement power supplies.

After checking multiple online sellers and local/national stores, the closest replacement power supply, though higher quality, costs the same as a new router.

Would be willing to pay more for a solution that has reliable components. Time has a value to it. The trouble must be that few other people take this view, there is only a market for cheap, unreliable components to bring the price in line with all the other vendors selling the "same" item.

I did buy another router, as perhaps all the router manufacturers would like us to do, but this is quite wasteful in this day and age, would you agree?

 "Fanastic Router" 2009-05-22
By Kerry Fonville (USA)
This is my very first router and I am so glad that I choose this one. I have been looking for a router for quite some time and came across this one during a search. Although it had only 2 reviews I was sold. The set up was quick and easy and within minutes I have been up and running ever since.

 "a very pleased customer" 2009-05-12
By T. Miller
I'm fairly new to wireless routers and I bought this to replace a Linksys that I have had problems with since I bought it. After talking with my internet provider and researching his recommendationas as well as other routers, I bought this D-Link and couldn't be more happier! The set up took about 10 minutes. The set up CD has clear and easy to follow instructions. The speed is amazing. I highly recommend this router to everyone and will.
