"Good Wireless Router but overpriced..." 2007-01-07
By Lahiruwan
I bought this a few weeks ago but got it from Singapore. The Router works as intended and haven't had problems so far.

My only concern is that this costs more than double in Amazon than what I paid for it in Singapore. Got it for about US$ 60 with tax in Singapore. Surely freight can't be that expensive??

"Pitiful documentation especially on security setup" 2006-09-16
By CF (Perth, Western Australia)
How anyone can sell a wireless networking product in this day & age without clear guidelines on setting up security is beyond me.

If you care about security at all be aware that the documentation included with product will not help you set it up. I'm MCP & CompTIA A+ certified & after three+ hours I'm still scratching my head.

 "Why all the negativity?" 2006-06-24
By Ronald Ih (Los Altos, CA United States)
I just got one of these and for the most part it worked just fine. Mr. Fleming's rating of 1 star doesn't make sense to me since he is blaming the D-Link for his ISP's inability to tell him what their setup is. The DSL-G604T has a *lot* of configuration options so I'm sure it could have been configured to work if the people at the ISP knew anything at all.

Pros:

Nice compact design which replaced two of my boxes (Speedstream DSL modem & D-Link DI-614+) with one. The DSL-G604T is actually smaller than my original DI-614+ alone. The upright stand helps save more space.

Many many configuration options which can allow you to set it up in many different ways. This is also somewhat of a con as explained below.

Setup was mostly easy for me and I got two wired PCs and one wireless PC using a D-Link wireless network card with WEP working in a few minutes. Getting my Thinkpad T40 wireless working took some work though (See below).

Cons:

Documentation is not so great and there are many features that are simply not in the help files or manual so it's not really clear what they are for. Basically, if it's not in the doc, don't mess with it.

The myriad of features is both a pro and con. The sheer number of configuration settings and the way they are arranged can be confusing to some one not familiar with networking or the DLink user interface. However to a sysadmin or some one who is experienced and needs that level of control it is a plus.

IBM T40 Wireless Debug: The only part that gave me trouble was getting my IBM Thinkpad T40 wireless to work with the DSL-G604T. I am not sure, but I am inclined to believe it's actually a problem with the Intel PRO Wireless 2100 drivers. The T40 I have is three years old and they have basically stopped providing new wireless drivers for it.

Basically, my T40 wouldn't connect to the G604T with WEP or with the encryption turned off. Just for yucks, I decided to try the WPA-PSK security with TKIP encryption and *boing* it instantly worked. While in WEP and no encryption, my T40 would always misidentify my wireless network channel as 0 so I really don't think D-Link is to blame for that. I think it is a driver bug with the Intel wireless chipset which they are unlikely to fix since it's out of production now.

I just put all the wireless devices on WPA-PSK TKIP and everything now works fine. I'm typing this on my T40 over wireless now.

Works great. Less filling. It just may take some tweaking to get it to work with non-D-Link wireless stuff. D-Link to D-Link worked pretty flawlessly.

Just remember that it takes two devices to have an interoperability problem and either one (or both) could be the culprit.

"Check with your ISP first" 2006-03-25
By Richard L. Fleming
After trying everything to get this to work, it came down to getting the required setup info from my ISP. Their position was "we can give you the information for the modems we sell, but we have no information on yours..sorry"

D-Link's position was " you have to get that information from your ISP or else you cannot use this product."

 "Jim"s rating" 2006-02-24
By James Ruth (Rockledge, FL USA)
I installed the hardware and the wireless router seemed to be working. However I couldn't get it set up properly. The instructions gave a link URL for setup but when I tried to contact it my browser returned with "unknown page". They should ship a setup disc with this product. A phone contact was unsucessful. I have since returned the product to the vendor.
