 "Defective" 2009-06-05
By Todd M. Moody (Marina del Rey, CA, USA)
Like other reviewers, I owned a DI-784 that failed spontaneously. Because the unit was defective and failed after about a year after purchase, D-Link replaced it. Two years later, the replacement unit failed with the exact same symptoms as the previous one: unresponsive with all LAN and WAN LEDs lit, and other LEDs unlit. The kicker is that when I called D-Link for another RMA, they first approved it, and then later decided not to honor the RMA. The reason? It had been more than three years since I purchased the defective unit. Unlike some manufacturers, D-Link doesn't reset the warranty period when they replace a defective product. Evidently, they had a hard time deciding whether they should stand by their defective product this time. They chose not to. Goodbye, D-Link.

Apart from the fact that the DI-784 is a defective series, I can't say how the performance compares to the competition. However, before buying this unit I liked and recommended D-Link. I still have a functioning DI-704, which I keep as a backup (and, owing to the DI-784 failures, I've needed it more than once). After reading numerous consumer reviews of current D-link products, it seems to me taht this lower standard of quality is now the norm. The DI-784 was my third D-Link product, but it will be my last.

"Not recommended for simultaneous A/G usage" 2007-05-22
By TommyGun
I've had this router for about 2 years, and am only now just starting to get it working reliably. I had the same issue reported by others with the router locking up after a few minutes (with all the status lights staying on). Customer service was not helpful. I upgraded the firmware, and finally figured out that if I disable the 802.11-a antenna (which i'm no longer using), the router lock-ups went away.

So, if you only need it to work with either an 802.11-a or g network, it'll probably work. However, I will not buy D-Link products anymore; they couldn't even figure this bug out, and they designed it.

"Excellent for Media Center and Xbox 360" 2007-04-20
By Scott Ziesmer (Columbus, OH USA)
I wasn't pleased with my previous router's performance (D-Link DI-624 rev C), so I did some research and picked up a new one. I purchased the D-Link DI-784 dual link A/G router and am happy to say that it works substantially better. I use the 360 as a media center and for gaming. If you set up the 360 to use the 802.11A connection, things have been, at least for me, substantially better. Before I had the occasional disconnect when listening to music and the occasional slow down with streaming HD-TV. With this model, no issues at all. Give it a shot if you have any performance issues with your current router. No complaints here.

"Piece of Junk - Do Not Buy - Non-Secure" 2009-03-21
By Joe H. (Virginia, USA)
Do not buy this box. I've vonage for multiple years, and have loved it. I just bought this box by my old Linksys router is dead. After talking to Vonage, I can confirm the box loses all security settings AND it won't work with Vista DHCP on wireless or wired - you need to use static IP address settings. The voice quality is fine.

This issue has existed for over a year, but D-Link and Vonage continue to rip customers off by selling these boxes. Tech support says there should be a fix in the future and the Vonage forums (non-official source) say there should be a firmware fix in May of 2009. I doubt it. Most likely it is a hardware issue that will never be fixed.

"Worst router I've ever had" 2008-12-17
By Benjamin Byrne (Albuquerque, NM USA)
I bought this after my LinkSys wireless Vonage router failed to survive a move. It has been problematic from day one. The wireless signal strength is weak; the wifi connection speed is slow, often gets dropped, and has trouble reconnecting. And now, less than 6 months after buying it, it's started to periodically lose all connectivity (wired, wireless, even phone) every few hours. The only solution I've found for this is to briefly unplug and re-plug the thing, which solves the problem for a while -- although 20% of the time I do this, it completely loses all the settings I'd programmed it with, forcing me to change the admin password, SSID, and wifi password over and over again. It's irritating to no end.

You're better off finding something else (or, more likely, a pair of something elses -- VOIP router and WIFI router).

 "Reliable" 2004-01-14
By Sires (It's a Toss Up Right Now)
In September 2001 I set our office up with a Broadband 802.11B Wireless Router from D-Link. That puppy gave me fits. I couldn't keep anything connected. Finally about a year ago it got so bad I replaced it with this router and access point.

Setup was easy, range is sufficient for us-- A two story 1890's home make into an office, and most of the network problems eased into oblivion.

I thought we were having a problem last week but it turned out to be a Siemens Wireless Network connector in its last throes.

When it comes time to replace this router I'll probably go for a D-Link again.

This is a good product that does what it says it does, most of the time. The reason I dont give it 5 stars is that every once and awhile it becomes dumb, it simply forgets that there is a cable modem hooked up to it, and the only way to fix this is to reboot it. It is a minor inconvenience, but can cause quite a bit of frustration in critical moments.

I picked up a second one of these routers because I needed detachable antennas (the silver version). I've used the old gray/black version for years and have been most pleased with it. With all the Wireless G stuff out now, this old B version with a print server is avaiable for $15 on ebay regularly. Unfortunately, the newer silver version has been consistent with many of the negative reviews on here. My wired connection seemed to work initially for 5 minutes (but very slowly), then cut off and I have never been able to ping the router since. The wireless portion is also similarly sporadic with odd disconnects and stalling. Maybe I was sold a known defective one, but at this point I can only recommend getting the old ugly gray version. If you need a central print server function for dirt cheap, try picking up one of these.

"Decent, but mine has some issues" 2003-05-10
By Sean Butler (Seoul, South Korea)
With the latest firmware, this has practically all the features I'd want in a 802.11b router, but, unfortunately, the wireless functionality has some problems, at least on my hardware. I had some minor trouble getting it running to begin with, but armed with the latest firmware, I had a functioning wireless network. Unfortunately, after awhile I began to notice that the signal would unexpectedly drop, suddenly and completely, and restore itself after about 3 seconds to 3 minutes (doesn't seem like a big deal until after you've been dropped from your third network game). Tech support wasn't a great help-- they seemed to initially be stuck on the idea that it was a signal strength issue, advising repositioning the antennas, moving it away from the wall, etc., which, predictably, didn't improve matters any. A later firmware upgrade helped somewhat, without completely eliminating the problem. Finally, tech support decided that the D-Link wireless PCI adapter wasn't compatible with XP, case closed, no refund/replacement, though everything seems to indicate that it's a problem with the router. Anyway, I've resorted to running 25' of cat5 cable, and everything's fine now. The print server had some issues with my HP inkjet printer, but that was a documented problem with HP printers and print servers, so I don't really blame that on D-Link. Anyway, I think I'll buy Netgear next time.

The D-Link 625 worked as advertised and did it quite well. But!!! the router comes with a 30 day trial of SecureSpot security software. Which is fine until the free trial expires. I tried it, canceled it, a year ago! Today the router said my 30 day trial expired,I have an option to Buy a 1 year subscription. The only page I can get via the router is the D-link SecureSpot Buy page. Instructions to bypass the page fail. The SecureSpot Software has turned my router into a Brick, it's useless. Sure you want to buy one? It will work for about 1 year, then use it as a planter.

"Zyxel router not up to the job" 2009-02-05
By Fabrizio Della Corte (Lugano, Switzerland)
I recently purchased the X550NH router from Amazon because of the following additional features that my current Draft N Zyxel router did not have:

-802.11 n (v2.0)

-GLAN ports (4 LAN + 1 WAN)

-External high gain designer antenna

-Scheduled WLAN on/off

-VPN tunneling

I have other ZyXEL devices including an NBG-415N router that I was planning to replace with this X550NH. I also own a DSL_ modem and a VOIP box from ZyXEL. I am giving it only two stars because the router is not functioning as it should.

Benefits:

-The design & size (looks good and does not take much space)

-Nice the external high gain antenna

Shortcomings:

-The admin GUI is much better with the older device (NBG-415N). The X550NH does not offer a help screen and has fewer options.

-It appears to be VERY slow (slow response time for the management web interface as well as the navigating the Web)

-PC disconnects frequently from router, even though signal strength seems at max (i.e. I need to refresh web pages often).

-No updated firmware available

When it's working it's good - decent wireless connection & Vonage service.

However, when there is a power loss or a cable interruption, the router re-sets or un-sets. I've become pretty good at re-setting the security feature by now. But a power loss causes other electronics I own to require a re-set, so this product is not alone

We recently installed satellite internet and needed to make our desktop wireless. The hard line for the internet was on the other end of the house! We purchased this USB Adapter and have been very happy with it. We get 60-100 Mbps approx. 70 feet from the wireless router. Hardline from router gets 100 Mbps so there isn't much loss.....and we live in a modular home with a steel roof! I'd recommend this product highly for those looking for an affordable USB adapter. This is a seemingly ordinary USB network adapter with one very special property: it runs on Windows 7 RTM 64-bit using the Vista drivers provided by D-Link. Setup was quick and easy, and I was up and running in minutes. Range and performance are pretty darn good, way better than with my G network. The other two N adapters I tried were a nightmare. I didn't realize how few manufacturers actually have released compatible drivers. I feel fortunate to have found this little gem. It even comes with a nice extension-cable and weighted base. Nice extra!! Finally my shiny new Windows 7 computer is up and flying on the network. Thanks, D-Link!

It worked very well the first time it was installed. Nice range, nice speed, etc... But that was short lived!

From the second time I turned on the computer the computer, every time I tried to plug it in it sent my computer crashing to a blue screen and a reboot. I invested hours of research and time on the phone with D-Link customer support to no avail. It crashes my computer every time I plug it in. New drivers didn't help, re-installing old drivers didn't help. It's just an immediate trip to bluescreen death! The worst thing of it all is that I can't even remove some of the old software that infected my computer along with it.

"Easy to Install but very poor range" 2009-08-10
By Ross Bertran
I purchased a D-Link DIR-625 Range Booster Wireless N Router several months ago to increase the range with my Dell Vostro 1500 laptop. I'm using it in a wood frame home where the router is in the basement (centrally located, against the ceiling) and my laptop is very often on the second floor near an outside wall. I purchased the DWA-130 to increase the signal strength over the Dell's internal G adapter.

The good: The install was simple and easy. I got the new adapter up and running in under 10 minutes with no problems.

The bad: The signal strength was worse than my internal G adapter.

This is very frustrating because I'm within 25' of the router anywhere in my home and unless I'm on the 1st floor or basement, the signal is terrible. I'm looking into exchanging the DWA-130 for a DWA-140 Range Booster N adapter hoping that it will increase the signal strength matched with my DIR-625.
