"Worked for a few months, then overheated and quit" 2009-12-16
By N Mcdonald (Midwest, USA)
Router worked fine for about 5 months and then overheated and quit. We ordered a Cisco Linksys replacement and installed it. According to the D-Link warranty info, I needed to have a Case ID number from an online tech who would first walk me through troubleshooting procedures. We needed an immediate router solution. I never did get around to uninstalling the new router so I could reinstall the non-functioning D-Link and call the D-Link tech support to get the required Case ID number. I'm not a computer novice so I'm sure the problem was with the D-Link router malfunctioning, particularly since nothing in the environment had changed and the new Linksys router resolved the problem. Plus, I would have had to pay for shipping the D-Link back to the manufacturer. Just wasn't worth the time, cost and hassle. The D-Link EBR 2310 was a disappointment. We chose it to replace an older technology D-Link that had served us well for several years.

The router is easy to set up and works fine, as advertised.

I use it as a router only, not as part of a Lan Network.

"DON'T BUY THIS PIECE OF BLEEP!!! DOESN'T WORK!!! THEIR OWN TECH PERSON EVEN ADMITTED THIS!!!" 2009-12-04
By M. Bradford (dallas, tx)
I bought this D-Link EBR-2310 router on Amazon, and spent several days trying to get it to work properly. I was determined to make it work, and spent about 12 hours total messing with it, re-starting the modem, re-starting computers, installing and re-installing drivers and software, calling D-Link tech support, etc.

We got the router to 'work' in that we had Internet connectivity on all three computers several times during this process. But every single time... as soon as all three of us starting browsing the web, it would slow Internet usage to a crawl, start showing page errors and kicking different ones of OFF the Internet.

After I'd spent about 10 hours total (over several days) messing with this, during one of my calls to D-Link tech support, I asked the guy if they got a lot of calls like this about this router. HER SAID YES AND ACTUALLY TOLD ME THIS ROUTER WILL ONLY RUN 1-2 COMPUTERS ONLINE!!! He said the other ports should be used for cameras or printers, etc., and that if I wanted to run three computers online, I'd need the D-Link DIR-655.

After ordering this thing in good faith - believing the product description which said it could handle up to four computers online - I was livid! I'd wasted hours of my life and lost productivity for 2 workers, all because of D-LINK'S FALSE ADVERTISING!

I called D-LINK customer service (after calling tech support) and they essentially accused me of lying about what their tech guy told me. I became more livid. Then they set me up on a phone call with one of their so-called engineers. He said their tech guy was wrong as well - that is, the guy who gets all the calls about how this piece of bleep works in the real world didn't know what he was talking about. Right.

D-Link offered to exchange it, but I'd already read others online who reported that even after an exchange, the replacement piece of bleep worked just as bad. In light of their BLATANT FALSE ADVERTISING which led me to waste 12 hours of my life and lose income from two workers' lost productivity, I demanded they send me the DIR-655 as a replacement, and was stone-walled.

Two days later, I went to Radio Shack and bought the Linksys Wireless-N Router (WRT160N-RM ), which I hadn't realized ALSO HAS 4 WIRED PORTS IN THE BACK, which is exactly why I bought the other piece of bleep in the first place. (I wanted wired, as opposed to wireless.) I hooked up Lynksys N Router to the same three computers, using the same cords, modem, etc., installed the software on the main computer, and then tested the netowrk. We had all three computers browsing online, and the router performed flawlessly, as it has ever since.

D-LINK NEEDS TO STOP LYING ABOUT THIS PRODUCT. IT DOES NOT WORK WITH THREE COMPUTERS ONLINE. AND THEY NEED SERIOUS HELP IN THEIR CUSTOMER SERVICE DEPARTMENT. ACCUSING CUSTOMERS OF LYING ABOUT WHAT THEIR OWN TECH GUY SAID, DENYING THE REALITY ABOUT THE PIECE OF BLEEP THEY'RE SELLING, AND TREATING THE CUSTOMER LIKE THE WHOLE PROBLEM IS THEIR FAULT IS WRONG, WRONG, WRONG!!! I DESPISE THIS COMPANY.

 "Complete garbage" 2009-12-04
By Jason F Young
Set-up was a breeze. The web-based UI was pretty clean and easy to understand. I had mine configured and running in minutes. But an old telephone switchboard operator moving cables around could outperform this brick. Web sites wouldn't load. The network would flap. And the router had to be constantly reset. Changing settings (like auto port speed detection and QoS) made no difference. Upon further investigation, it seems it's a design issue and not one of quality control. It's just not a capable piece of hardware. After many hours of research and mucking with it, I pulled it off and reinstalled my PIX 501.

"Good solid router, cheap and reliable." 2009-12-04
By J. J. Marino (Rochester, New York)
I got this for a family member. I was kind of leery on buying a cheap router. I was pleasantly surprised at the ease of setup and the overall ease of use. I suppose there are features not present here but I couldnt find anything major missing. Security, VPN and more are really easy to do.

I am very happy with the range too for such an inexpensive router.

Pros:

>> Cheap

>> Good signal at range

>> Decent speed

Cons:

<< Feels weaker in spots

Summary:

Overall this is a really good, solid performing albeit plasticy feeling router.

Thank you for reading my review.

The range is good, though I live in a small apartment right now. We'll see how it does when I move next year.

But right now I gotta say I'm very happy with this decision. Great performance and a great price!

Avoid this product!!!

I had a terrible experience with this product:

-I bought it from Amazon.com, installed and after 2 days of usage, the product was dead. Frozen, not working at all and even without the power cord, the product was blinking.

-I contacted the customer service and they treat you like someone withou brain, asking you very basic questions and following a protocol that will not address your issue in less than an hour of questions

-Everytime I had to contact them I have to went through all the questions again.

-I have to pay $30 dollars to receive a new router next day, otherwise they will not going to charge you, but you will receive the product within 14days (which was not an option for me)

-The new router wroks fine for exactly two days and then I have to reset the product. I tried everything and they do not know the problem. They said that they already changed my router and they will not change it again.

-Bottom line: they not care about the customer, they not have a good product, and it is very expensive.

I made the mistake of purchasing this product just over a year ago. It sits safely on my desk, out of harms way. Last night, the router mysteriously stopped working. Thinking it was me, I followed the "help" directions and got nowhere. My next step was Linksys customer service. The first representative suggested that I purchase another router, and made suggestions. Purchase another router?! After 9 representatives, supervisors, and managers, I was told that the product is only guaranteed to last about 10 mths. which essentially means buying a wireless router once per year. There is no standing behind their product, it's 10 mths. and done. NO THANK YOU.

"Piece of Junk - Do Not Buy - Non-Secure" 2009-03-21
By Joe H. (Virginia, USA)
Do not buy this box. I've vonage for multiple years, and have loved it. I just bought this box by my old Linksys router is dead. After talking to Vonage, I can confirm the box loses all security settings AND it won't work with Vista DHCP on wireless or wired - you need to use static IP address settings. The voice quality is fine.

This issue has existed for over a year, but D-Link and Vonage continue to rip customers off by selling these boxes. Tech support says there should be a fix in the future and the Vonage forums (non-official source) say there should be a firmware fix in May of 2009. I doubt it. Most likely it is a hardware issue that will never be fixed.

"Worst router I've ever had" 2008-12-17
By Benjamin Byrne (Albuquerque, NM USA)
I bought this after my LinkSys wireless Vonage router failed to survive a move. It has been problematic from day one. The wireless signal strength is weak; the wifi connection speed is slow, often gets dropped, and has trouble reconnecting. And now, less than 6 months after buying it, it's started to periodically lose all connectivity (wired, wireless, even phone) every few hours. The only solution I've found for this is to briefly unplug and re-plug the thing, which solves the problem for a while -- although 20% of the time I do this, it completely loses all the settings I'd programmed it with, forcing me to change the admin password, SSID, and wifi password over and over again. It's irritating to no end.

You're better off finding something else (or, more likely, a pair of something elses -- VOIP router and WIFI router).

In September 2001 I set our office up with a Broadband 802.11B Wireless Router from D-Link. That puppy gave me fits. I couldn't keep anything connected. Finally about a year ago it got so bad I replaced it with this router and access point.

Setup was easy, range is sufficient for us-- A two story 1890's home make into an office, and most of the network problems eased into oblivion.

I thought we were having a problem last week but it turned out to be a Siemens Wireless Network connector in its last throes.

When it comes time to replace this router I'll probably go for a D-Link again.

This is a good product that does what it says it does, most of the time. The reason I dont give it 5 stars is that every once and awhile it becomes dumb, it simply forgets that there is a cable modem hooked up to it, and the only way to fix this is to reboot it. It is a minor inconvenience, but can cause quite a bit of frustration in critical moments.

I picked up a second one of these routers because I needed detachable antennas (the silver version). I've used the old gray/black version for years and have been most pleased with it. With all the Wireless G stuff out now, this old B version with a print server is avaiable for $15 on ebay regularly. Unfortunately, the newer silver version has been consistent with many of the negative reviews on here. My wired connection seemed to work initially for 5 minutes (but very slowly), then cut off and I have never been able to ping the router since. The wireless portion is also similarly sporadic with odd disconnects and stalling. Maybe I was sold a known defective one, but at this point I can only recommend getting the old ugly gray version. If you need a central print server function for dirt cheap, try picking up one of these.

"Decent, but mine has some issues" 2003-05-10
By Sean Butler (Seoul, South Korea)
With the latest firmware, this has practically all the features I'd want in a 802.11b router, but, unfortunately, the wireless functionality has some problems, at least on my hardware. I had some minor trouble getting it running to begin with, but armed with the latest firmware, I had a functioning wireless network. Unfortunately, after awhile I began to notice that the signal would unexpectedly drop, suddenly and completely, and restore itself after about 3 seconds to 3 minutes (doesn't seem like a big deal until after you've been dropped from your third network game). Tech support wasn't a great help-- they seemed to initially be stuck on the idea that it was a signal strength issue, advising repositioning the antennas, moving it away from the wall, etc., which, predictably, didn't improve matters any. A later firmware upgrade helped somewhat, without completely eliminating the problem. Finally, tech support decided that the D-Link wireless PCI adapter wasn't compatible with XP, case closed, no refund/replacement, though everything seems to indicate that it's a problem with the router. Anyway, I've resorted to running 25' of cat5 cable, and everything's fine now. The print server had some issues with my HP inkjet printer, but that was a documented problem with HP printers and print servers, so I don't really blame that on D-Link. Anyway, I think I'll buy Netgear next time.

 "Problems from the start" 2009-07-30
By Matthew Greenberg (San Jose, CA USA)
I just bought the router today and the thing does not work. I followed the installation procedures and I am having problems connecting with the internet with the router present.

The installation was a snap but after the installation, I could not connect. I talked to Tech Support and they helped somewhat and I was treated well but the woman admitted to me that they are getting many calls about connection problems. She helped me connect my desktop but my laptop was not working wireless or with the network cable with no success. She said that I would have to go to level 2 support...

I am an engineer and not a technical slouch... I am successful is diagnosing problems but the router should work as designed otherwise you have to configure every machine connection individually which is not how the router was designed.

I did a second install which did not work either. This router is going back to Fry's; I do not know if the G version of this router is worth it or should I try another brand (it is hard to decide between the reviews that I read from the other vendors)...

Any ideas?

"The worst tech. support ever encountered." 2009-07-29
By W. Silva
I purchased the WRT54G2 and followed the instructions to the letter. The install was straight forward and I encountered no problems. When finished, the instructional cd informed me that the installation was successful. When I attempted to use my laptop on the wireless network, it would not connect. I eventually contacted tech. support. BIG MISTAKE. After an hour of following numerous changes to the network settings I was told that it must be my computer. My laptop is what I use at work, & it works flawlessly every day in a wireless setup. However, I was told to go to work and try again. The laptop worked fine at work. So I called again today, after another hour, I was told that BOTH my laptop & desktop were broken & that I needed to get them fixed before the Linksys router would work. I told the tech that both computers were worked perfectly before the 2 hours of changes & that Linksys is responsible for the network problems that I now have. I was put on hold to talk to a supervisor. After 38 minutes of music, I hung up & have sent the Linksys back to Amazon. I have been using computer related equipment for over 25 years. I have never encountered such useless & counter productive advice. The Linksys tech support makes HP support seem like Apple Care!

"Great router though the range isn't as good as it could be" 2009-07-28
By T. Wheatley
The router works great. I had previously been using a Netgear WGR614 router (which was still 54mbs and wireless g enabled). The Netgear router kept dropping the connection and seemed like it was overheating.

I purchased the Linksys router and like it for the following reasons:

1. Looks much more sleek

2. The Internet seems faster and more responsive

3. My Vista machine gains back its connection much more quickly when coming out of sleep or hibernation

4. No more dropped connections

5. Option for https configuration

6. Has WPA2

7. Tried out the connection and the WPA2 works with the Wii, and the G1 Android phone. Ooma worked fine through the wired plugin.

Things that could use some improvement:

1. I don't like it when you have to install software for peripherals and accessories. I installed the software, and will uninstall it because I can get to the advanced settings directly through the router interface.

2. I checked the signal strength in different parts of the house before I disconnected my old router and then after connecting the Linksys router. Where I received Very Good with the old router, the Linksys router only gives Fair to Good connection strength.

I bought this product after my DLink router died. It lasted 4 years, so I was happy with the purchase. Anyhow, I went to BB because I did not want to wait for a unit to ship. I purchased this unit and it would not work. (There were no Dlink items in stock) I spent about an hour with "customer service" and they said it was unable to work because of our network. We have Comcast and I had already contacted them and was certain it was not their issue, as we have cable and phone service and both were fine. I returned the unit to BB and purchased a Netgear router. It was easy to setup and has been great. It is less expensive as well.

The number of rave reviews on this item say it all - but it really is a solid little unit, and I wanted to add my voice to the chorus. The unit feels well built, and even the solid colors inspire confidence :)

I have no plans to use non-Linksys firmware, but its nice to know that I have that option.

Happy Networking!

"NO CD included/warrenty runs out& you are up a creek!" 2009-07-11

I bought the highly recommended WRT54G last March. It has been an excellent router, but "stick it to ya" is the quality of customer aftercare! Today I needed to reinstall it on my iBook and called Tech Support as previously instructed. Because my warrenty had run out, I was told I had to buy $29.99 Support for the incident or $39.99 for 6 months. NO CD HAD BEEN INCLUDED AND I WAS TOLD THAT I DIDN'T NEED ONE when I called upon delivery from Amazon last March! BOTH Amazon and LinkSys told me that! The first response I was given was that LinkSys could not help that I had not gotten a CD. After many minutes of being put on hold and wrangling over this, I had to raise my BP and my voice to get instructions as to where I could find guidance to reinstall. It is on their web site; it is a download. Getting that info was like pulling teeth! The Router is the first and last LinkSys product I will buy or even consider! LinkSys is going to go out of business if they keep up the "lies ' n lines!" It is not the employees' faults - it is LinkSys Policy!!!!!!

 "Widreless router" 2009-07-09

Linksys-Cisco WRT54GL Wireless-G Broadband Router

This was a snap to intall and has worked just without any problems. One nice feature was that it printed out the wireless security code which enabled be to see that I had made a typo in entering the code that would have made it difficult to access the wireless.

 "So far so good" 2009-07-09

I ordered this product because of all of the positive reviews. I'm happy to be able to add another positive one. I live in a decent sized house and so far I have not had a problem getting signal in any of the rooms. I have been able to use my computer outside as well. I was able to set everything up and get it running in about an hour maybe less and it was all very user friendly and fairly simple. Over all I'm happy I chose this router.
