"Works great with bot XboX 360 Live and PC" 2005-12-20
By Jakob Petersson (Los Angeles, CA United States)
I started to get problems using MSN Gaming Zone with my old router (DI 614+). Http Browsing was still ok, but gaming was slow, lagging or unable to enter gaming rooms.

I updated to this router as I also wanted the a network for my xbox 360.

It works fine now both for games on PC (Age of Empires) and Xbox Live.

- Remember to buy the latest model of 774 with one antenna. Has better CPU in it

- The web interface for the setup was a bit confusing for a and g network. But infact both a and g are always on. You just have to switch a button to set the settings separate for each protocol

this is a 2 star or less router which will take you a week of screwing around if you havn't read my review. out of the box the DHCP Server within the router will re-lease lan ip's every 9min, 24/7, constantly restarting the lan, which somehow causes all kinds of seemingly unrelated problems throughout your lan if you don't follow these simple steps. when you get the router home, plug it into the wall, cable modem and computer. turn everything on and wait for things to settle down. log onto the web base interface by pointing your web browser to your new router's lan IP of http://192.168.0.1/ (BTW, 192.168.0.1 is not a public IP . . . it's contained within your local network), admin, no password. click the tools tab and firmware button and download the firmware to your desktop. MOST importantly: nOw . . . GeT a BaLlPoInT pEn aNd ReSeT the router _BEFORE_ u go back and update the firmware!! congratulations, you have a smooth running, art state, 5 star router

I had a high-end 802.11b router for two years. When I started having problems, I wanted to go with a dual-band router. This was the cheapest one, but it matched my requirements (built-in switch). Not only was the setup simple and quick, but the network delay caused by my earlier router disappeared. I now have a great wireless network with blazing speed. Wonderful product.

"Good range with 2.4Ghz, and Solid Connection" 2003-08-14
By Dirk W.
I am using a DWL-G650 in my laptop and my wife uses an 802.11a based card in her laptop she uses at work mostly. She gets a good connection from within the room of the office, but if she goes very far away from the room she loses her connection. 802.11a is that way for everyone so it isn't just this router. That is the price you pay for faster speeds.
802.11g is a happy medium with adequate speeds and good range. I can go anywhere in the house and if I am furthest I can get from the router I still get a good 2Mbps transfer speeds which means no slow down in gaming online and surfing online.
The router/AP keeps our connection fairly good. There have been times when we were dropped from the wireless connection, but it came back up in about a minute after that. It happened at completely random times so it might have been something do to with interference or some weird wireless thing. It rarely happens and it fixes itself so everything is fine with me.
I'd recommend it to others and advise in changing the default password, SSID, and enable WEP to actually be secure. You'd be suprised that about 75% of people don't secure their wireless connections.

 "There are better products." 2003-06-08
By Dustin Aldridge (Crofton, MD USA)
This was my first dive into wireless. I was very disappointed and immediately thought wireless still wasn't ready for primetime. My whole idea was that I wanted 802.11a so that I didn't get any interference from my cordless phones or my neighbors who are close. DON'T EVEN BOTHER WITH 802.11a. Real world distance capabilities in my house were much less than 802.11g on this unit. I used it with a Dlink DWL-AG650 card.

Anyway. A friend at work let me borrow a Netgear WGR614 and it is working much better in my house than this Dlink unit. Zero dead spots using the Netgear on 802.11g with the same DWL-AG650 card. I also haven't experienced any problems in relation to cordless phone interference. The Netgear has better security features anyway.

The Netgear WG511 card had the same performance as the DWL-AG650 card.

Bottom line. There are better units out there.

 "generally decent" 2009-04-07
By Alan Friedman (Alexandria, VA)
When it's working it's good - decent wireless connection & Vonage service.

However, when there is a power loss or a cable interruption, the router re-sets or un-sets. I've become pretty good at re-setting the security feature by now. But a power loss causes other electronics I own to require a re-set, so this product is not alone

 "it just works" 2009-07-21
By Dan (San Jose , CA)
just installed 2 of these in my home network (one as 802.11n only access point @ 5ghz, the other as a wireless bridge). setup for both took about an hour, fairly painless. got the N network up and running with no issues. the bridge connected to the AP quickly and without a hitch. i did a file copy between 2 desktops via the 802.11n wireless network, Vista says an average of 8.77 mbps, and a 32.7 gigabyte ISO file took 1 hour and 6 minutes to copy without any hiccups. this should be more than ample to stream a blu-ray movie over the wireless N network.

 "Nice product but?????" 2009-07-12
By Thomas M. Taylor (Phoenix, AZ)
I have had this little gem up and running for about a month. Set up was a real pain, but after having nothing to do for about 8 hours, i was able to get this device up and running.

The print server works just fine. i use it on a multi function printer, but have not tried the multifunction part yet.

4 stars only because of the set up was a royal pain.

"Do not buy for Wireless Bridge" 2009-07-08
By William J. Bennett
The wireless bridge function is nearly worthless. I had an AP in the next room and it rarely found a signal even though my laptop next to it had full strength on wireless. When it did get connected, it would only stay that way for about 5 minutes then drop with no indicatiors.

"Excellent Wireless Bridge; Poor Instructions" 2009-07-06
By AV
I've set up 4 of the DAP-1522's in bridge mode, 1 for me and 3 for friends and family, all connected wirelessly to D-link wireless routers (DIR-655 and DGL-4500) utilizing WPA2 encryption.

WPS (Wi-Fi Protected Setup) makes setup a breeze if your router also supports WPS (you don't even have to access the web-based coniguration utility). Push the WPS button on your wireless router until it starts blinking and within 120 seconds, push the WPS button on the DAP-1522 until it starts blinking. Within a short time (less than a minute?), the DAP-1522 connects securely and wirelessly to your router.

In my setup, I have a 2 standalone blu-ray players, a PS3 and a Denon 3808CI receiver connected to the bridge with Cat6 or Cat5e cable. My wireless router is located about 50 ft. away in an upstairs room. Both blu-ray players and the PS3 have wireless built-in, but I was getting better signal strength using the bridge. Also streaming Netflix (including Netflix HD), Pandora and YouTube through the blu-ray players. All four components can also stream media from any other pc on the home network.

Where D-link fails is when you have to actually manually configure or want to update the firmware on the DAP-1522. The instructions, imho, are really unclear and dealing with D-link support over the phone is a test of patience. Basically, if you have a router and need to access the web-based configuration page of the DAP-1522, you'll need to connect it to an open router port. The switch on the back of the DAP-1522 should also be set to AP (access point). Once that is done, type in the ip address, 192.168.0.50, into the address field of your browser and you'll get to the login page of the web-based configuration utility.

Other than the instructions, the product has been working as advertised and having 4 ports instead of 1 like other bridges is also a major plus.

"Good product, hard to find, but not all hoped for" 2009-07-03
By R. J. King (Los Angeles, CA USA)
The DAP1522 from D-Link is an inexpensive yet effective way to get multiple wired devices connected to a wireless internet signal from another room. It's simple and easy to set up, and doesn't take much space.

That said, it was hard to find, because many retailers that claim it as "in stock" really have it on backorder, which could take weeks or months to get (and D-Link may not even be supporting this product anymore).

It's great for gaming systems, advanced TVs or set-top boxes that don't have built-in wi-fi. It's also useful for setting up a wired network in a separate room from where your cable or DSL comes in for fast file transfers and streaming HD video.

However, if you want to run a home server, this is not the box for you. Some internet sources claim this box supports WDS, but it does not. It's only a client bridge, meaning MAC addresses and local IPs are funneled into one at the DAP1522. Your router will only see whatever device happened to send information last, preventing you from doing any port forwarding or advanced packet routing to the server.

 "Lot of disconnects" 2009-07-03
By Vidit Bhargava (Memphis, USA)
I bought this router for cheap somewhere else. Wasn't expecting much but just wanted no disconnects. I have to say this, this is a bad product. Don't know why D-Link had to ruin its name by bringing this out. It worked just fine for a couple of days and then it started to disconnect every half hour. I exchanged it for another piece (same model) and the new had the same issues. I updated the firmware to the latest version and disabled the gaming mode (to check if it works) its working fine till now.

On the up side it has a good web interface and lots of features. The setup was easy and did not take long.

 "garbage" 2009-06-10
By Joseph Whiting (seattle, wa)
I cant believe its taken me this long to hunt for a new router. My old linksys seemed to be flaky and I picked up one of these on the cheap. I've a 1.3" drilled a hole in the lid and screwed ridiculously loud server fan attached to a variable voltage wall wart, even at full juice this dies in the middle of file transfers. I've also put heatsinks on the three ic chips that get hot inside the unit (yes i have that much time)... it's still garbage. Its not heat, so it must be awful firmware or crap manufacturing. Save your time and money and pass on this router.

"might need to put it on a light switch" 2009-06-07
By Mike (Sevierville, tn usa)
Since I bought this one it has had to be reset at least once a day. It will be fine then it just drops it's wireless connection. I tried firmware update, and many many fixes on the web. There are so many fixes for this router on the web, why, because it doesn't work. So the only fix I know of is to put it on a light switch so that it gets reset several times a day, or well I just went back to my old slow reliable wireless B.

 "Pretty much worthless" 2009-05-30
By Chris (Poughkeepsie, NY)
To be short and to the point:

This router shuts off and resets itself at random times, without warning. This is especially annoying when you are trying to get something accomplished online.

For the longest time, I wasn't able to change even the most basic settings, like making the router secured by a password or even changing the name of the connection.

Please do not buy this router, go with a Linksys instead.

This product worked fine for about 10 months of it's 1 year warranty. (Note that most routers should work about 3 years) I tried to contact D-Link to replace and they keep giving me the 'run-around' and are incredibly difficult to get in touch with.

BEWARE! DO NOT BUY D-LINK PRODUCTS or THIS ROUTER!

You should Buy Linksys, get your money's worth!

When I bought the product, the product had many issues. Thus, I had to call their tech. support many, many times for assistance. After numerous attempts, not to mention LONG holds each and every time I called, they've finally concluded that the product I purchased was defective. (the tech support staff could barely speak English.) They told me that they'll send me a new product as long as I send them my defective one (I had to pay for the shipping). However, the product they sent me is used!!! This truly has been the worst experience I ever had!! I wouldn't recommend this product or Dlink!

I had a lot of trouble connecting this device and getting it working. I was lucky enough to get a wonderful HP rep who was willing to help me out. Once I got it connected, it has been working fairly well but during the set up process I contacted dLink for help and I got none. They were rude and totally impatient. And it wasn't just a fluke. I tried calling them several times (because the set up got really screwed up and I had to restore my laptop of 2 years to original factory condition) and I got the same treatment from every rep I talked to. I finally gave up on getting any assistance from them. Customer service may not be important to everyone but I consider it very important and dLink gets about 0 stars from me on that side.
