"Good Wireless Router but overpriced..." 2007-01-07
By Lahiruwan
I bought this a few weeks ago but got it from Singapore. The Router works as intended and haven't had problems so far.

My only concern is that this costs more than double in Amazon than what I paid for it in Singapore. Got it for about US$ 60 with tax in Singapore. Surely freight can't be that expensive??

"Pitiful documentation especially on security setup" 2006-09-16

How anyone can sell a wireless networking product in this day & age without clear guidelines on setting up security is beyond me.

If you care about security at all be aware that the documentation included with product will not help you set it up. I'm MCP & CompTIA A+ certified & after three+ hours I'm still scratching my head.

 "Why all the negativity?" 2006-06-24
By Ronald Ih (Los Altos, CA United States)
I just got one of these and for the most part it worked just fine. Mr. Fleming's rating of 1 star doesn't make sense to me since he is blaming the D-Link for his ISP's inability to tell him what their setup is. The DSL-G604T has a *lot* of configuration options so I'm sure it could have been configured to work if the people at the ISP knew anything at all.

Pros:

Nice compact design which replaced two of my boxes (Speedstream DSL modem & D-Link DI-614+) with one. The DSL-G604T is actually smaller than my original DI-614+ alone. The upright stand helps save more space.

Many many configuration options which can allow you to set it up in many different ways. This is also somewhat of a con as explained below.

Setup was mostly easy for me and I got two wired PCs and one wireless PC using a D-Link wireless network card with WEP working in a few minutes. Getting my Thinkpad T40 wireless working took some work though (See below).

Cons:

Documentation is not so great and there are many features that are simply not in the help files or manual so it's not really clear what they are for. Basically, if it's not in the doc, don't mess with it.

The myriad of features is both a pro and con. The sheer number of configuration settings and the way they are arranged can be confusing to some one not familiar with networking or the DLink user interface. However to a sysadmin or some one who is experienced and needs that level of control it is a plus.

IBM T40 Wireless Debug: The only part that gave me trouble was getting my IBM Thinkpad T40 wireless to work with the DSL-G604T. I am not sure, but I am inclined to believe it's actually a problem with the Intel PRO Wireless 2100 drivers. The T40 I have is three years old and they have basically stopped providing new wireless drivers for it.

Basically, my T40 wouldn't connect to the G604T with WEP or with the encryption turned off. Just for yucks, I decided to try the WPA-PSK security with TKIP encryption and *boing* it instantly worked. While in WEP and no encryption, my T40 would always misidentify my wireless network channel as 0 so I really don't think D-Link is to blame for that. I think it is a driver bug with the Intel wireless chipset which they are unlikely to fix since it's out of production now.

I just put all the wireless devices on WPA-PSK TKIP and everything now works fine. I'm typing this on my T40 over wireless now.

Works great. Less filling. It just may take some tweaking to get it to work with non-D-Link wireless stuff. D-Link to D-Link worked pretty flawlessly.

Just remember that it takes two devices to have an interoperability problem and either one (or both) could be the culprit.

"Check with your ISP first" 2006-03-25
By Richard L. Fleming
After trying everything to get this to work, it came down to getting the required setup info from my ISP. Their position was "we can give you the information for the modems we sell, but we have no information on yours..sorry"

D-Link's position was " you have to get that information from your ISP or else you cannot use this product."

I installed the hardware and the wireless router seemed to be working. However I couldn't get it set up properly. The instructions gave a link URL for setup but when I tried to contact it my browser returned with "unknown page". They should ship a setup disc with this product. A phone contact was unsucessful. I have since returned the product to the vendor.

I updated to this router as I also wanted the a network for my xbox 360.

It works fine now both for games on PC (Age of Empires) and Xbox Live.

- Remember to buy the latest model of 774 with one antenna. Has better CPU in it

- The web interface for the setup was a bit confusing for a and g network. But infact both a and g are always on. You just have to switch a button to set the settings separate for each protocol

this is a 2 star or less router which will take you a week of screwing around if you havn't read my review. out of the box the DHCP Server within the router will re-lease lan ip's every 9min, 24/7, constantly restarting the lan, which somehow causes all kinds of seemingly unrelated problems throughout your lan if you don't follow these simple steps. when you get the router home, plug it into the wall, cable modem and computer. turn everything on and wait for things to settle down. log onto the web base interface by pointing your web browser to your new router's lan IP of http://192.168.0.1/ (BTW, 192.168.0.1 is not a public IP . . . it's contained within your local network), admin, no password. click the tools tab and firmware button and download the firmware to your desktop. MOST importantly: nOw . . . GeT a BaLlPoInT pEn aNd ReSeT the router _BEFORE_ u go back and update the firmware!! congratulations, you have a smooth running, art state, 5 star router

I had a high-end 802.11b router for two years. When I started having problems, I wanted to go with a dual-band router. This was the cheapest one, but it matched my requirements (built-in switch). Not only was the setup simple and quick, but the network delay caused by my earlier router disappeared. I now have a great wireless network with blazing speed. Wonderful product.

"Good range with 2.4Ghz, and Solid Connection" 2003-08-14
By Dirk W.
I am using a DWL-G650 in my laptop and my wife uses an 802.11a based card in her laptop she uses at work mostly. She gets a good connection from within the room of the office, but if she goes very far away from the room she loses her connection. 802.11a is that way for everyone so it isn't just this router. That is the price you pay for faster speeds.
802.11g is a happy medium with adequate speeds and good range. I can go anywhere in the house and if I am furthest I can get from the router I still get a good 2Mbps transfer speeds which means no slow down in gaming online and surfing online.
The router/AP keeps our connection fairly good. There have been times when we were dropped from the wireless connection, but it came back up in about a minute after that. It happened at completely random times so it might have been something do to with interference or some weird wireless thing. It rarely happens and it fixes itself so everything is fine with me.
I'd recommend it to others and advise in changing the default password, SSID, and enable WEP to actually be secure. You'd be suprised that about 75% of people don't secure their wireless connections.

 "There are better products." 2003-06-08
By Dustin Aldridge (Crofton, MD USA)
This was my first dive into wireless. I was very disappointed and immediately thought wireless still wasn't ready for primetime. My whole idea was that I wanted 802.11a so that I didn't get any interference from my cordless phones or my neighbors who are close. DON'T EVEN BOTHER WITH 802.11a. Real world distance capabilities in my house were much less than 802.11g on this unit. I used it with a Dlink DWL-AG650 card.

Anyway. A friend at work let me borrow a Netgear WGR614 and it is working much better in my house than this Dlink unit. Zero dead spots using the Netgear on 802.11g with the same DWL-AG650 card. I also haven't experienced any problems in relation to cordless phone interference. The Netgear has better security features anyway.

The Netgear WG511 card had the same performance as the DWL-AG650 card.

Bottom line. There are better units out there.

Linksys WRT350N Wireless-N Gigabit Router with Storage Link

Buy Cheap Linksys WRT350N Wireless-N Gigabit Router with Storage Link

Buy Low Price From Here Now

The Wireless-N Gigabit Router with Storage Link is really four devices in one box. First, theres the Wireless Access Point, which lets you connect to the network without wires. Theres also a built-in 4-port full-duplex 10/100/1000 Switch to connect your wired-Ethernet devices together at up to gigabit speeds. The Router function ties it all together and lets your whole network share a high-speed cable or DSL Internet connection. Weve also included a Storage Link that lets you easily add gigabytes of storage space onto your network using readily available USB 2.0 hard drives -- or plug in a USB flash disk for a convenient way to access your portable data files. The built-in Media Server streams music, video, and photos from the attached storage device to any UPnP compatible media adapter. And you can get to your files from anywhere in the world through the Internet. The Access Point built into the Router uses the very latest wireless networking technology, Wireless-N (draft 802.11n). By overlaying the signals of multiple radios, Wireless-Ns Multiple In, Multiple Out (MIMO) technology multiplies the effective data rate. Unlike ordinary wireless networking technologies that are confused by signal reflections, MIMO actually uses these reflections to increase the range and reduce dead spots in the wireless coverage area. The robust signal travels farther, maintaining wireless connections up to 3 times farther than standard Wireless-G.

"Not so stable - needs to reboot every now and then" 2009-03-08
By Raymond Lee (Fremont, CA United States)
I did not get a better reception than the 4 years old SMC router. My son also complained about me paying so much for this piece of crap when comparing to the SMC router that I owned for more than 4 years.

Every now and then I had to reset this router ever after upgrading to the latest firmware. After several months, it finally died and I couldn't get it up anymore, i.e. never able to get to the http admin home page.

Luckily, it has 3 years warranty, instead of getting a refurbished one of the same model, Linksys is sending me a refurbished WRT600N which suppose to me more expensive than the WRT350N. Not sure if it is sure but that's what the email said.

But I am not so excited about getting the WRT600N either. Based on the review from other people, the WRT600N does not seem to be any better. Linksys has been selling good quality products but I am disappointed about the WRT350N. In this case, I do not recommend it to anyone.

 "WRT350N working great" 2009-03-04

I installed this to use with my Desktop (XP) and a Laptop (Vista), the Desktop wired, the Laptop wireless. The wiring of the Desktop was easy, I installed the software, followed directions and startup went perfect (did need to call my ISP for one piece of info). The Desktop worked flawlessly.

The Laptop came with a wireless card so only needed a menu setup and it was working, at least I could connect to the internet. When I tried to set up file and printer sharing with my Desktop (the printer is connected directly to the desktop) I found the lack of any explicit instructions related to this was a problem for me. Several days of internet research finally resolved it and now all works perfect.

 "Slow and awful" 2008-01-29
By Pando
This router works alright, and set up was pretty smooth. But that's where the good ends. I also own a 802.11g D-link router that has 1 antenna. This "Pre-N" router has worse coverage is 10x slower. Literally. I use to download from the same server at over 200k/sec, now it's about 20/k sec. It's slower than a 802.11b or anything I've ever seen. Maybe it has to do with configuration that needs to be done with older G wireless adapters, but I'm sickened by this purchase. This is suppose to have 2 super antennas, but coverage and speed stink more than ancient routers with 1 antenna.

"router with plenty of challenges" 2007-03-03
By Ibrat
DI-624M is easy to install and provides good signal (at least within the range of my flat!). However, despite the fact that it is easy to install, it is a massive challenge to make it work efficiently afterward. It usually works okay for some time after installation and re-installation (which happens periodically), but after a while it tends to do its own thing (looks like this device has the mind of its own!). It connects to the internet, but prevents many programmes from accessing it altogether (with an exception of Skype, in my experience).

Pros:

1) easy to install

2) good signal

Cons:

1) settings change without any prior action and/or your intention

2) settings change without any prior action and/or your intention

3) did I mention that settings change by themselves???

If you are considering purchasing a router, it would, probably, make sense to try getting some other product. This may prevent you from pain of trying to work out how to make DI-624M function properly.

"DO NOT BUY THIS ROUTER" 2007-01-09
By Unhappy dlink user
Bought this router to replace a DI-524 that had a broken antenna. Verified the firmware shipped with the unit was the latest, and was able to connect to the internet on the wired pc, but the wireless pc had poor/no connectivity. Tried a different channel, and that improved the signal strength, but still less then the DI-524. Tried to use email, (Outlook Express on Comcast), and received errors that indicated an MTU sizing problem. Tried, unsuccessfully, to change the MTU on the router, so made the mistake of calling DLINK support. After 2 hours on the phone, was informed that I needed to contact Comcast to find out why their modem won't talk to Dlink's router. Heck with it...I put a piece of wire on the DI-524 to replace the antenna, and returned the DI-624M.

Don't buy this router!!!! UPDATE 1/20/2007 - Didn't return it, because the vendor won't RMA it...NO RESPONSE FROM VENDOR. I'm out the $45.00....

I bought this to replace my Linksys BESFR41 cable/dsl router and Linksys WAP11 access point. Mistake! Everything worked fine out of the box, but my WAN performance went down 66%. With Linksys, I had Internet download speeds of 9742Kbps, but with this D-link Di-624M I get 3072Kbps. I can't get it to go any faster. I have switched back and forth between the two to no avail. What is the problem? Does anybody know? I'm wishing I wouldn't have bought it now. Wasted my money.

 "Great, with new firmware." 2006-05-05
By Aidan O'Brien (Brisbane, Australia)
This is a great router in terms of speed and coverage. Once updated with the new firmware, the DI-624M has worked really well with "very good" signal, even through brick walls.

While I was updating it, the firmware update page timed-out after about 30mins, though after refreshing the page, it was apparently finished.

Unfortunately though, the router doesn't include Bigpond cable login client which is annoying since I have Bigpond. Also when I changed it's IP back to *.*.0.1 from *.*.1.1 (for ICS), the webconfig stopped working till I restarted it. Besides these two things, it's been great and I highly recommend it.

Apparently it's better to update the firmware when the router's cool (turned off for a while and under a fan), and it is possible to fix bricked ones.

"Works but the storage feature has a long way to go" 2007-01-23
By Amin Abdul-karim (Seattle WA USA)
I bought this router to replace my DI-524. It does what I need and the storage feature works...sort off. There is no documentation on it and you have to read a tonne of internet posts to get it working. In my case, the labels on the ports were switched so a flash drive in USB1 actually shows up as connected to USB2. Other than that I could not connect to this drive from my desktop without another undocumented gem - use the IP address from wireless and the router name from the desktop. Also the partitions are readonly depending on the formatting of the storage you connect - NTFS partitions are readonly...

Finally, turn on the VPN pass-through feature for PPTP and IPsec else you will not be able to connect to your corporate network. Tech support does not really help and you have to wade through lots of documentation and tech support sites to figure this out.

If I had to buy this router at the regular price I would not do it. It cost me about $15 so I think it was OK

"D-Link 624S Router Installation Fails on DSL PPPoE Connection" 2007-01-14
By Howard Keech (Ontario, Canada)
1. The 624S installation fails at the point of the WAN "Connect". There is no informative diagnostic. It does nothing. An IE test confirms the no-connection.

2. I have used both the "Install Guide, v1.0" setup wizard method. and the method given on page 84 of the "User's Manual" for any PPPoE connection which says NOT to run the wizard. The 2 authors should get together. Both methods fail.

3. I changed Ethernet cables, Amazon kindly sent a second 624S router (both fail), and I changed the computer NIC. Through all these changes and tests, switch-backs to a direct connection to my ISP using DSL PPPoE always worked. The latter also involves changes to the "Trend Security" package to switch from a "direct connection" to a "home network", the latter for the router inclusion.

4. Most tests were done using Windows XP, SP2. Turning off the Windows Firewall did not help. I also tried using a 98SE partition with failure at the same juncture.

5. I tried for help from D-Link technical support. Note that I live in Canada and received the 624S on a family visit to Syracuse. The Canadian support centre states they have no support and no knowledge about the 624S model since they do not sell it. Perhaps they were aware of unstated problems. Further, one cannot access tech support from the U.S. D-Link company from Canada -- they refuse to answer. NO HELP.

6. I believe no reputable company wants to impose non-functioning equipment on its customers. There could be an assembly line flaw with some units (2 failed), not too likely with quality control. Or maybe the firmware (April 2005) needs revision -- none available.

7. To conserve space, I have not listed my "Ping", "Ipconfig" and "Netsh" tests. My TCP/IP configuation, username and password have been reset many times.

8. To sum up, something is wrong and I have no access to competent technical support to decide if it is settings, software or hardware.

"It works! and I got it cheap!" 2007-01-11
By William Diaz (Miami, FL)
I certainly relate to what people are saying here. I had my DI-624s for about two months and it took over a week for Sunrocket (VOIP service) to get back online. Somehow the 624 was blocking ports or something. I knew that calling the D-link support was hopeless so I called Sunrocket instead once I got transfered to Peer2 support it took about 30 minutes to configure the sunrocket box to work with this router. Funny thing is that my older 614 worked fine with the same configuration.

Then there's the network storage. NO info on it at all, I plugged my portable HD and nothing would show up on "Network places" I sent Support and E-mail...still waiting. It turns out that the network storage takes some time to show up. so if you walk away and come back it will show the network storage.

I looks like every time you plug something in you have to access the router settings and share the device. I hate that because One of the reasons I wanted this was just to plug stuff and see it right away on my xbox running XBMC. Now it forces me to turn a PC on to share the device.

Once the device shows up the PC and xbox can see it with no problem, was able to stream 800mb avi file as well as DVD format files. no problem.

I noticed I couldn't write to the network device, Well I just read here that there's no NTFS write support, so I will have to format the drive in FAT32. At least I found what the problem was, I spend several minutes trying to write something to it. then I just gave up and plugged the network drive directly to the PC and wrote to it.

Overall I Paid $13 for this router so I can't complain to much. it's been on all this time since I got it and I've only rebooted it once when playing around and switching back and forth between DHCP and static Ip on the xbox. After the reboot I got my static IP back.

Overall most of my stars are for the price! but definitely D-link dropped the ball

 "Not enough security" 2007-01-10
By Krystmas (Stone Mountain, GA United States)
The router provides with it advertises. However, there are some problems with they way that it provides everything. First is the fact that it doesn't have any in-depth manual that tells you how to use the features on the router. Second, the setup for the shared folders is not documented and the support available from a tech is non-existant. Third, the wireless encryption is manual. You have to setup your own wep key or whatever type of key you want.

Overall I don't like this router because you have to fumble through everything to get it working. Once it is setup its fine, but it will take the average user about 3 weeks to get EVERYthing going.

 "Utter Junk" 2007-01-03
By Salman Khan (Phoenix, AZ)
Utter junk. USB is impossible to use. The wireless throughput is slower than a dialup. I bought it and spent 2 hours with D-Link customer support and they asked me to return it for a replacement. Not sure if that is going to help, since i think the product is faulty and replacing this piece is not going to change one thing.

There is no firmware update either. If I could, I would give it zero ranking.
