"Worked for a few months, then overheated and quit" 2009-12-16
By N Mcdonald (Midwest, USA)
Router worked fine for about 5 months and then overheated and quit. We ordered a Cisco Linksys replacement and installed it. According to the D-Link warranty info, I needed to have a Case ID number from an online tech who would first walk me through troubleshooting procedures. We needed an immediate router solution. I never did get around to uninstalling the new router so I could reinstall the non-functioning D-Link and call the D-Link tech support to get the required Case ID number. I'm not a computer novice so I'm sure the problem was with the D-Link router malfunctioning, particularly since nothing in the environment had changed and the new Linksys router resolved the problem. Plus, I would have had to pay for shipping the D-Link back to the manufacturer. Just wasn't worth the time, cost and hassle. The D-Link EBR 2310 was a disappointment. We chose it to replace an older technology D-Link that had served us well for several years.

The router is easy to set up and works fine, as advertised.

I use it as a router only, not as part of a Lan Network.

"DON'T BUY THIS PIECE OF BLEEP!!! DOESN'T WORK!!! THEIR OWN TECH PERSON EVEN ADMITTED THIS!!!" 2009-12-04
By M. Bradford (dallas, tx)
I bought this D-Link EBR-2310 router on Amazon, and spent several days trying to get it to work properly. I was determined to make it work, and spent about 12 hours total messing with it, re-starting the modem, re-starting computers, installing and re-installing drivers and software, calling D-Link tech support, etc.

We got the router to 'work' in that we had Internet connectivity on all three computers several times during this process. But every single time... as soon as all three of us starting browsing the web, it would slow Internet usage to a crawl, start showing page errors and kicking different ones of OFF the Internet.

After I'd spent about 10 hours total (over several days) messing with this, during one of my calls to D-Link tech support, I asked the guy if they got a lot of calls like this about this router. HER SAID YES AND ACTUALLY TOLD ME THIS ROUTER WILL ONLY RUN 1-2 COMPUTERS ONLINE!!! He said the other ports should be used for cameras or printers, etc., and that if I wanted to run three computers online, I'd need the D-Link DIR-655.

After ordering this thing in good faith - believing the product description which said it could handle up to four computers online - I was livid! I'd wasted hours of my life and lost productivity for 2 workers, all because of D-LINK'S FALSE ADVERTISING!

I called D-LINK customer service (after calling tech support) and they essentially accused me of lying about what their tech guy told me. I became more livid. Then they set me up on a phone call with one of their so-called engineers. He said their tech guy was wrong as well - that is, the guy who gets all the calls about how this piece of bleep works in the real world didn't know what he was talking about. Right.

D-Link offered to exchange it, but I'd already read others online who reported that even after an exchange, the replacement piece of bleep worked just as bad. In light of their BLATANT FALSE ADVERTISING which led me to waste 12 hours of my life and lose income from two workers' lost productivity, I demanded they send me the DIR-655 as a replacement, and was stone-walled.

Two days later, I went to Radio Shack and bought the Linksys Wireless-N Router (WRT160N-RM ), which I hadn't realized ALSO HAS 4 WIRED PORTS IN THE BACK, which is exactly why I bought the other piece of bleep in the first place. (I wanted wired, as opposed to wireless.) I hooked up Lynksys N Router to the same three computers, using the same cords, modem, etc., installed the software on the main computer, and then tested the netowrk. We had all three computers browsing online, and the router performed flawlessly, as it has ever since.

D-LINK NEEDS TO STOP LYING ABOUT THIS PRODUCT. IT DOES NOT WORK WITH THREE COMPUTERS ONLINE. AND THEY NEED SERIOUS HELP IN THEIR CUSTOMER SERVICE DEPARTMENT. ACCUSING CUSTOMERS OF LYING ABOUT WHAT THEIR OWN TECH GUY SAID, DENYING THE REALITY ABOUT THE PIECE OF BLEEP THEY'RE SELLING, AND TREATING THE CUSTOMER LIKE THE WHOLE PROBLEM IS THEIR FAULT IS WRONG, WRONG, WRONG!!! I DESPISE THIS COMPANY.

 "Complete garbage" 2009-12-04
By Jason F Young
Set-up was a breeze. The web-based UI was pretty clean and easy to understand. I had mine configured and running in minutes. But an old telephone switchboard operator moving cables around could outperform this brick. Web sites wouldn't load. The network would flap. And the router had to be constantly reset. Changing settings (like auto port speed detection and QoS) made no difference. Upon further investigation, it seems it's a design issue and not one of quality control. It's just not a capable piece of hardware. After many hours of research and mucking with it, I pulled it off and reinstalled my PIX 501.

"Much Better Than Expected Results!!!" 2009-11-07
By King Menes (New Orleans, LA)
I bought two of these for PC's that have D-Link DWA-552 Xtreme N wireless adapter cards. Both PC's sit on the floor under desks. The PC's are networked with a D-Link DIR-655 Xtreme N wireless router.

The first PC is in another room 29 feet from the router. There is one wall (wood frame/drywall) between the PC and the router. The D-Link ANT24-0230 antenna boosted the original signal strength of 3 bars (good) to a solid 5 bars (excellent). The antenna sits on top of the computer desk. I had to play around with the position of the three antennas to get a consistent 5 bar signal strength.

The second PC is in another room 51 feet from the router. There are four walls (wood frame/drywall) between the PC and the router. The D-Link ANT24-0230 antenna boosted the original signal strength of 2 and an occasional 3 bars (low to good) to a solid 4 bars (very good). The antenna sits on top of the computer desk monitor stand. I had to play around with the position of the three antennas to get a consistent 4 bar signal strength.

I was a junior IT techinician. I believe this router is the worst router I have ever seen.

Don't buy it!

I believe Linksys was good. But after they merge with Cisco, they sucks!

I will buy an old blue one.

"Product seems good; customer support extremely poor!" 2009-12-10
By E. Sharp
This product seems to do what I wanted; wireless for my netbook and access for it to the desktop, including printing. BUT...it took parts of three days to set it up ...telephone support from Linksys was extremely poor! The Rep said she had to go to a quieter place and told me to wait by the phone, which I did, and she never called back. I tried the online chat help and they had no suggestions. A new setup program is needed to be downloaded that the tech never mentioned. The self help files online helped, in addition to checking a lot of permissions, security programs, and such on your own. If you know how, have the time to do it, or someone to help, great! If not, don't count on customer support.

Hint: be sure you use the IP address and access the setup on your wireless router to change the security settings...or anyone that knows anything will have access to your computer.

"Stay Away - Not Worth It" 2009-12-07
By Directorate (Oak Grove, KY)
I'm just going to make it short and sweet. This router, and by going to online forums, has a widespread problem of continuously dropping the connection. The bigger problem is that if you're not computer network savy you won't be able to figure it out on your own, so you have to talk to customer support who give you a fix that should be only temporary, but it appears this is their permanent fix instead of a serious firmware update.

If you're buying a router for the looks then this is it. It looks good, but other than that if you want to avoid frustration stay away.

I got this for a family member. I was kind of leery on buying a cheap router. I was pleasantly surprised at the ease of setup and the overall ease of use. I suppose there are features not present here but I couldnt find anything major missing. Security, VPN and more are really easy to do.

I am very happy with the range too for such an inexpensive router.

Pros:

>> Cheap

>> Good signal at range

>> Decent speed

Cons:

<< Feels weaker in spots

Summary:

Overall this is a really good, solid performing albeit plasticy feeling router.

"Installation annoying but great NIC." 2009-11-19
By L. Autry (St. Louis, MO)
Don't know which one Amazon has but the one I got is Rev A. Followed onscreen instruction as installation guide said. Initially it could not find the SSID even when told (mine is hidden). I also downloaded the latest drivers from the D-Link website. Finally, I went to the Connection Manager and clicked on "MY WIRELESS NETWORKS", then clicked on New, then put in the Profile Name, SSID, etc. It came right up. It's still not visible in the Connection Manager list. However, it is visible in the upper part of the Connection Manager GUI. I am running Windows 7 RTM (32 bit). The NIC is running at 270 Mbps (bits not bytes) with no perceptible dropouts. So only two stars for having an annoying installation but definitely a worthwhile investment. I absolutely LOVE the weighted extension cord/mount.

It is very bulky. It is much bigger than the typical USB jump drive. Fortunately, an external dock is supplied so that it does not block closely spaced USB ports. The external dock is a bit of a hassle for a laptop, but it's worth it if you need/want the speed.

"Great, except for one major flaw.." 2009-10-05
By Nate Carlson (Savage, MN USA)
If you don't have advanced routing requirements, this will work great for you. The range and speed have been great; no stability issues, etc.

In my case, I needed to add a route to allow local machines to reach another subnet on the internal network. On the router this replaced, it was trivial to create a route on the LAN interface. This router only supports adding static routes on the WAN interface.

This is just silly -- this is one of the most trivial functions a router should be able to do. I contacted D-Link support, and apparently the feature has been removed, and they are trying to find out why.

 "Multi-computer and Gaming Router" 2009-09-23
By HvR (Raleigh, NC USA)
I recently set up my home wireless system upgrading from a Belkin G to a Netgear Rangemax dual band and it was a complete disaster. Rangemax has known firmware issues that will not allow multiple machines to connect without re-booting and disconnecting every five minutes - customer support for Rangemax was Horrific.

I now set up this DIR-855 and absolutely love it~! At any one point in our network we will have up to three laptops, four desktops and two X-box machines running at the same time and have not experienced any lag or drop in signal using both the N and G channels at the same time.

The boys X-box live experience has improved incredibly. I was worried about trying to find the DMZ or NAT settings on this new unit and have not had to look for them once since the initial set up.

Easy to install, fast and maintains a solid connection.

The only drawback that I can find in this system is that the N channel is weaker than I had expected. One desktop machine is through two walls and about 50ft from the router and the best I can pull is a "fair" connection at about the same speed I can link to the G channel. Machines that are less than 30ft and have only one wall to go through seem to consistently receive 80mbs according to the network connection status on the machines.

For X-Box Live Gaming this router is excellent and feel very good about spending the additional money for a quality piece of equipment.

Since the 1.21 firmware release, this router has hung every few days and required a power cycle to reset. Maybe it would be OK if you hook it up to a timer such as Indoor Electronic Programmable Plug-In Timer with Front LCD (High Wattage) that power cycles it daily when you're not using it. I would recommend reading the forum comments on dlink's own web site.

Best bang for your buck! Finally had NO wireless issues WHAT-SO-EVER. Period!

The only (and I MEAN ONLY) Drawback I've had is not being able to control port blocking as D-Link's in previous products.

(Would be a REALLY GREAT and Fantastic router if you could add memory, port-blocking, and ability to expand the Firewall log!)

Other than that, works great, and delivers on the advertised features. you get what you pay for. Want a cheap router-and get cheap features that don't work??-Get the blue-P.O.S.
