"Does not work as advertised" 2009-01-17
By Mike Speed (New York)
The DWL2100AP worked OK as an access point, but does not work as a repeater. Other reviewers suggest that it works only with other D-Link products, because of proprietary protocols. All I know is I wasted a lot of time trying to get it to work as a repeater, and was unsuccessful. I bought a Hawkings repeater, and had it working in 15 minutes. If you need an access point, you can find a cheaper one. If you need a repeater, buy something else.

 "Very Effective Bridge" 2008-11-17
By Ann Engh
Purchased 2 DWL-2100AP's to use as a bridge between 2 buildings with an unobstructed distance of about 750ft. I was expecting the usual 2-day setup headache to integrate these into the network, but to my surprise the 2100AP worked perfectly once the initial configuration was completed. Plugged in an old Linksys WAP54g to the far end of the bridge and created a greatly expanded network. Total setup time took less than 1 hour. I have not measured data transfer, but it seems very good. No problems with streaming video, etc.

The instructions for the 2100AP are a little sketchy, and D-link seems to interchange some technical terms that mean the same thing (adds color and confusion to their writing!). However, I did not find the instructions any worse than the several Linksys or Netgear Wireless Routers that I have installed over the past couple of years.

If we get a couple of years out of these, for the price, I'll be happy. It seems like there is no middle of the road wireless equipment. Either it is really cheap of dubious quality or really expensive. Someone needs to come out with some equipment that is of better quality at a reasonable price.

"Great performance after a difficult setup (AP Client Mode w/ Switch)" 2008-03-07
By stoney (seattle)
I have a d-link router (DI-624) that I use for my wireless network. I wanted to install this access point on the network, attach a switch, and provide network access for a home-theater pc and an Xbox 360.

modem <-> router ... accesspoint <-> switch <-> pc & xbox

The access point can operate in five different modes. After some trial and error, I finally figured out that it was the "AP Client" mode that I needed from the wireless setup options to gain access to my existing wireless network.

After plugging in the switch and attaching the PC and Xbox to the switch, it was soon obvious that only the PC had connectivity. After much hair pulling, I finally found a post on dslreports.com by one lizi555 that explained a fix. Apparently the latest firmware (beyond 2.10) does not allow for more than one device (MAC address) to connect to the network via the switch.

To fix, telnet to the 2100AP's IP address 192.168.0.50 and enter the following commands -> set matstate 1 then -> reboot

This should set a flag for a variable to the following "MultiEthClient (Yes)!" You can check by establishing another telnet session and entering -> get matstate which will list several variables/values including the one above.

It took some doing, but now everything is flowing sweetly. I hope this helps anyone else that runs in to this problem.

I have 3 of these units working with a shared but hidden network and after some work and software upgrades have them set up for a good area network system... They work great once you figure them out... The instructions and on line support are not the greatest for a wireless network novice... Once you understand what you want and what they supply, you can set up a good home or local area wireless network...

 "Does the job, but..." 2007-09-14
By Barrett Campbell
It (or a combination of it and my wireless router) intereferes with bluetooth. Now if I want to use the bluetooth on my phone, I have to unplug all this stuff ;(. VERY ANNOYING!!! Installation took 3 hours with 2 different reps. D-link customer service is outstanding, by the way. Also, my download speed seems to be limited to 75 kbps on the WAP end. Upload is more than double that, which is wierd. Looks like I need another few hours on the phone with tech support.

Bottom line...works kinda well when you actually get it set up. However, getting it set up can be an exercise in patience. Expensive for the speeds I'm seeing :(

"Has Worked Flawlessly For Me!" 2008-12-08
By Rob W. (Florida)
I have used this router for a couple of years now and wasn't going to write a review on a discontinued piece of equipment. But while writing up a review on the D-Link 2.4GHz Omni-Directional 7dBi Indoor Antenna ( ANT24-0700 ) that I recently purchased, I noticed that a few users had some poor experiences with this router.

So basically I am just adding my voice to say that I've not had a problem at all with the DI-624 over the couple of years I've had it. In that time, I did download the updated firmware and that may have helped. Fortunately, I haven't had to use their customer service, which I understand is not the best.

My nephew-in-law works for IBM, recommended this router and has used it a lot in his work. He swears by D-Link products and we both recommend them to people we know.

So even though you are not likely to buy this router, as this model has been replaced by other newer models, do consider the D-Link brand as a router you would look into as a quality brand wireless router. I highly recommend the brand.

 "It works - mostly" 2008-06-09
By T. Acar (Seattle, WA)
Hmm. I have Revision C.

I am not about to say this is crap or that this thing is rock solid. This is a second tier wireless router. It used to drop the network every now and then and resets itself -- I am not sure if it still does that after a couple of firmware updates. Oh, yes, go get the latest firmware for it, and don't run without updating the firmware. Unfortutely, restoring your settings from a saved file does not work, so you'll have to configure the thing manually. That is somewhat annoying, but since firmware updates seem to come to a closure, maybe you don't need that anymore :)

I have only two RJ45s connected to it: one that comes from my DSL modem (I think it is marked on the device with "WAN"), and only one of the 4-ports that I connecto my my internal network. That only port is connected to another switch in my intranet. I wanted to connect a computer directly to one of this guy's 4-ports, but it dropped the connection (or reset itself) so frequently, I got fed up with it and just treat it as if it is part of my DSL modem.

So, if you have the idea that you could use this as your internal swotch, I urge you to reconsider that aspect. Use it as a firewall, as a wireless router, a DHCP server, etc., but not as a general purpose switch togeher with the rest.

"Product is ok, D-link support SUCKS big time" 2008-03-31
By RJ (USA)
have been using this product for more than a year .. the product is great, but the d-link support SUCKS!! after i got it and installed it (by the way, the installation was simple for me, the direction were acurate), but my phone line was interfering with the signals and whenever i got a call, i used to loose connection.

So i called the d-link support to ask for suggestions. The first line of support had some standard answers about changing channels etc which were not really helpful. So they transferred me to their technical support and the nerve of that guy who answered the call .. he just told me not to use my phone .. i was so pissed that if that guy was in front of me i would really have given him a piece of my mind .. i told him that if you guys knew that there would be such problem (especially since he had a ready answer), why do they not publish this as a known issue of their product in their website .. i also asked him how would he react if called for some support for some other product and got such an answer .. anyway, after thanking him for NOTHING and telling him that i would be returning the product (he cared less whether i returned it or not), i hung up the phone .. anyway, i calmed down and started looking at the setup and various options and got a channel or downloaded the latest software (i do not remember eactly what i did) but i got it working .. i have not really had any serious issues with it since .. do note that i am a software professional and so kind of knows about software and hardware installations because building software is my job ..

i recently shifted to a bigger house which has 2 floors and i have the router on the top floor .. currently i am connected with it from the floor below and it is showing full signal .. i do have the "booster" option on .. i do not remember the correct option, but i am sure you can find that in the settings ..

a point to note that is that when you reboot the router, it looses all the setting like the MAc filters etc and becomes available to everyone .. something which might be obvious to others, but i missed and noticed it when i reviewed the logs and found lot of my neighbours using my router .. someone accidently or purposely even changed some of my settings because even the admin password got reset to the defaults ..

Update - Dec 2008

Had a issue couple of months back when I dropped the router .. all the lights just stayed on and the router was not working. I tried all options, rebooting etc, but nothing would make it work. So I removed the connections and connected my computer directly to my modem and I no longer had the wirelss connection and I started looking around for a new router. But luckily I forgot to completely remove the router and it was left switched on. After a month or 2, I noticed the lights were blinking. So I wondered whether it has started working .. and I connected it back and tried the connection and suprisingly everthing was back to normal :-) .. it has been 3-4 months since then and its still working ..

"STILL KICKIN AFTER 3 YEARS" 2006-02-21
By D. B. Rosenbaum (West Coast)
My 2 Antenna version is still working after 3 years. I rarely will have to reboot it. The wireless functions work ok too, however there are newer routers out there that have a lot more features. Speaking of features, most of the configuration settings don't work. For instance, the Port 80 remote management, never worked right from the get go.

I would like to upgrade my router to one with more wireless security features however since this baby still works like a champ with my desktop, I'm going to keep it and run ethernet cables throughout my house to the other computers and not set up a wireless network.

If you can still find this router out there, you may want to get it for it's solid stability but as mentioned, don't get your hopes up too high with the browser based configuration settings.

By D. Smith
Almost three years ago I set this up to use with my IBM ThinkPad T30. It was simple to set up, worked the first time and has worked reliably ever since. The best indicator of a tech product's effectiveness is that it does its job and you forget it's even there. This product meets that criteria. Sure, 802.11b is being pushed out by 802.11g. So what. If you want a reliable product with good performance, this is one. When wirelessly surfing the web on my laptop, it appears to be just as quick as my desktop (hardwired throught the DI-614+). To specify, mine is the older 2-antenna version.

"Read up about the 1.20 firmware before buying" 2009-07-29
By R. Perkins (Nashville, TN United States)
I owned a D-link wired Gaming router that worked great, so after my roommate bought a few of the D-Link Xtreme N bridges, I thought I should get a proper wireless router and a couple of bridges to go with it to connect up all rooms in the house. Unfortunately, I made the mistake of updating to the latest firmware as soon as I brought the router online. Apparently, the latest firmware is completely broken. My router locks up every 3-5 days or so. It has to be physically power cycled. My roommates are not happy with me when this happens. Seriously, I wish they would fix this. I just got the router a couple of weeks ago, but from what I've read the broken firmware(that you can't roll back) has been around for over 3 months without a fix yet. Boo on D-Link.

"Hangs randomly with newest firmware" 2009-07-08
By Terry Gold (Boulder, CO USA)
I've had this router for about a year, and it worked well at first, except that my Windows Home Server would occasionally fail when it tried to admin it via UPnP. I thought upgrading to the latest firmware might help fix the problem, but it's ruined what was a pretty good router.

When I downloaded the 1.20 firmware, the website did say that once "upgraded" the router could not be reloaded with the older firmware. I thought, it's a router, why would I ever want to reload older firmware? I pushed update, and that was the last time my router worked like it is supposed to.

If you look at the D-Link forums for this product you will see many people complaining that the router has to be reset every few days. D-Link has said they are aware of the problem and they are working on a fix, but so far (7/7/09) the firmware that they released in May is still broken.

If you buy this router now, be warned, you'll want to put it somewhere so that you can pull the power on it and reset it every few days, or your internet access will get slow and eventually stop.

"This router just works ! (with a few setting tweaks)" 2008-12-24
By Random Johnson
For me this router was probably the cheapest router, giving the best results. If you can find this router for around the price of $50, get it.

Initially when I hooked this router up, nothing worked. So i started researching and reading on what to do.

The process took a LOT of stupid and needless reboots. Least to say that was a BIG annoyance and thats because I had to reboot the router for each setting change or that changed setting wouldn't be remembered. So setting it up will take a good amount of time. Continuing....

after doing my research. I decided to restart the router to its factory settings and then reset my ISP Modem. Afterwards, I connected to my router via wireless. There were no problems for me because there were no passwords or keys involved. First I went to Home -> Wireless: set the "Channel" to 3, set "Super-G" to Disabled (it's completely useless!), set "802.11g Only Mode" to Enabled (I've read that the router randomly reboots if that setting is Disabled, meaning if wireless B is enabled the router reboots), set "SSID Broadcast" to Enabled, set "Security" to "WPA-PSK". chose a WPA mode, used the AES Cypher, and made a strong key.

In TOOLS -> Miscellaneous make sure "Discard PING from WAN Side" is set to Enabled. "UPNP Settings" are set to Disabled. and "Gaming Mode" is are set to Disabled (If you regularly play online multiplayer video games set it to Enabled).

After a good few reboots, everything was set. This router is excellent I consistently get 1.6 MB/s (Megabytes per second) when downloading Linux distros through bittorrent. My max connection if I were to be on through the ethernet cable would be 1.75 MB/s. Just showing how capable this router is.

"Good feature set, poor long-term reliability" 2008-02-17

I purchased this router last year and it has served me well for about 6 months. The feature set is comprehensive, flexible, and the configuration is reasonably straght-forward.

After about 6 months of flawless service, the router has gone flaky and fails to pass through DNS server info to DHCP clients after it has been up for a while. The router itself reports the DNS servers fine and everything can be fixed with a reboot.

D-Link support is outsourced, but can speak and understand english well. However, even with level 2 support, they have not yet been able to come up with a fix.

"used for a year, incredible performance, stability, and reliability" 2008-01-27
By Gadget Lover (USA)
I've used Netgear, Linksys, Airlink, and D-Link routers in the past, and this DI-634M has been the best router yet.

I purchased it a year ago because my DI-614 would constantly daily rebooting, just to retain signal on all my routers, and my IBM T43 wouldn't work with the DI-614.

I did a lot of research, saw the tons of favorable reviews here on Amazon, and decided to try out the DI-634M a year ago. Wow, what an amazing product.

I have had to reboot this product maybe once or twice in the last year, never had a problem setting ANY pcs up on this router, and the signal reaches all corners of my house and beyond. The performance beats my old DI-614 router, even when it was set up with an expensive $80 Hawking AC amplified antenna!

A friend of mine started having problems with his WRT54GL, and I helped buy this router to replace the dying router. Same results - rock solid stability, range, and reliability.

I would not hesitate to buy this router again, even over all the new "draft N" stuff. I *highly* recommend this router!!

I have to say, i bought this product as it was cheap. After rebate i got it for $[...]. I expected it to work in two room apartment and for 6 months. Was thinking of buying a new one after I move to a new place. But its 4 years now and It still works. I get Good signal when i was 30 feet away and with 2 walls in between. I added DLink antenna and i get very good signal for this. I dont get Excellent in the farthest distance. Partly it could be because i have 2 cordless phone of same frequency (2,4 Ghz). With "Very Good" signal, my browsing was easy. Never felt its slow. Im very happy with this product. Setup is so easy. You could save your settings and track who is connected and bar connections based on IP/MAC and there are many more cool features too. The DLink support was also very good. I had to call them few times to get help in securing my network. I would rate 5. Would definetly recommend it.

"Will waste your time like no other product" 2007-07-04

I have had this router for about two years, and it has never worked smoothly. The WPA-Personal implementation simply won't work, just like many of the advanced features in this unit. What is the purpose of including MAC address filtering if the router will have to be restarted every 10 minutes if you try to enable it? That is also true for many other settings in this router. By the way, every time a new device joins your network, it has to be restarted--it could be a laptop, a game console, even another D-Link product simply will not work on the first try. Spend a few dollars more and time and, ultimately, money.

I bought this a couple years ago and had no problems at all with it. It was VERY easy to install and gave a solid, reliable signal at all times.

 "Hunk o' Junk" 2009-07-22

A friend bought this product a while ago, but just decided to have me install it. I installed it on his computer (which runs XP), but my up-to-date Vista laptop cannot connect to his router wirelessly. It detects it, but that's it. Even using all the same settings and right password, I can't get Internet access. D-Link will NOT support this product even though he just opened it, so BUYER BEWARE! I would not recommend ANY D-Link product. His previous wireless router was also a D-Link, and it stopped working not long after it was successfully installed.

"Awful product plus really poor supprt" 2009-05-18
By R. Azeez (NJ USA)
This is an awful product. It crashes and reset often. I had it repaced by DLink and still no luck. To make matters worse DLink tech support are rude and clueless. I have 2 other friends with the same device and similar problems. There may be an intrinsic design flaw with this device.

I finally replaced the router with another brand and has been very happy since.

The device was NOT purchased via Amazon.

Note to Amazon - allow a 0 star rating which is what the device deserves.

"Don't buy this one, you may regret it bigtime" 2009-04-03

Like others here I've been plagued by the frequent reboots. It works just fine for hours and hours and hours (which for me means I've got it configured correctly) and then for no apparent reason it reboots itself. Nobody asked it to, it just does. If I could disable rebooting that would be a start. I'd be perfectly happy if the whole reboot mechanism didn't work and I had to unplug it if I want it to reboot. Then it wouldn't have the power to do it of it's own accord.

All the solutions offered here are unique to the person's own situation. Changing channels, turning of SSID transmission, switching security settings, switching off wireless mice etc. None of that should be necessary if the thing is capable of working just fine most of the time. What is it that makes it think it needs to reboot once in a while.

The most annoying thing of all for me now is that I have no idea what I should buy instead. I'm perfectly happy to throw this thing in the trash, but don't know what I could replace it with that isn't just as bad. Clearly a D-Link product of any kind is out of the question, but what's better?

 "Reliability issues" 2008-09-08
By ultrabike (Irvine, CA)
I have never written a review before in amazon, but my experience with this product has been too frustrating to just forget about it.

I bought this product about a year and a half ago. I have H/W Ver: D1. The system worked OK the first month. Then all the LEDs froze green and the network went down. I called customer support and they told me to disconnect the device power cord and wait for about 30 sec before I connected it back. This worked in getting the router to work again. However, waiting 30 sec only sounds reasonable if this rarely happens (maybe once every 3-6 months). As time went by however, the need to do the power cycle procedure became more frequent. Now, the router does not come out of LED freeze mode even if I wait half a day before I connect the power cord again, which to me it means that the router is broken.

Among the things I tried I have to mention that I installed F/W updates which did not improve things significantly. I bought another router today (something other than D-Link) and shared my experience with a sales representative. He said that 2 years was a reasonable life for a wireless router because they are turned on all the time. However, I have a cable modem that is well over 2 years old (Motorola) and it is flawless so far. Granted, a cable modem is not a wireless router, but the point is that both are on all the time, and one does a good job and the other one (D-Link DI-624) doesn't.

I will not buy another D-Link product again. Hope this is useful to you.
